KĀYĀNUPASSANĀ
Ānāpāna Bhāvanā
• Ānāpāna Bhāvanā is taught by the Buddha in Kāyānupassanā
section of Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta , The Great Discourse on
the Establishing of Awareness,/ Foundation of Mindfulness,
in Mūlapaṇṇāsa, Majjhima Nikāya Pāḷi Text. (M,I,56)
• Where is the place the Buddha preached Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna
Sutta?
• ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā kurūsu viharati
kammāsadhammaṃ nāma kurūnaṃ nigamo.
• Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta was preached by the Buddha while
he was dwelling in Kuru Country at the village named
Kammasadhamma.
Kuru dynasty was located in
the area of Haryana, Delhi
and western parts of Uttar
Pradesh in India.
• The 7 benefits of Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna:
• ‘‘Ekāyano ayaṃ, bhikkhave, maggo sattānaṃ visuddhiyā,
sokaparidevānaṃ samatikkamāya, dukkhadomanassānaṃ
atthaṅgamāya, ñāyassa adhigamāya, nibbānassa
sacchikiriyāya, yadidaṃ cattāro satipaṭṭhānā.
• This is the one and only way, monks, for the
purification of beings, for the overcoming or
surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the
extinguishing of suffering and grief, for walking
on the path of truth, for the realisation of
nibbāna: that is to say, the fourfold establishing/
foundation of awareness/mindfulness.
• ‘‘Katame cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī
viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke
abhijjhādomanassaṃ; vedanāsu vedanānupassī viharati ātāpī
sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ; citte
cittānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke
abhijjhādomanassaṃ; dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati
ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ.

Which four? Here, monks, a monk  abides contemplating the body
as a body, ardent, fully aware, and mindful, having put away
covetousness and grief for the world. He abides contemplating
feelings as feelings, ardent, fully aware, and mindful, having put
away covetousness and grief for the world. He abides contemplating
mind as mind, ardent, fully aware, and mindful, having put away
covetousness and grief for the world. He abides contemplating
mind-objects as mind-objects, ardent, fully aware, and mindful,
having put away covetousness and grief for the world.
14 kāyānupassanā
• 1. Ānāpāna pabbaṁ

• 3. Sampajānapabbaṃ
• 4. Paṭikūlamanasikārapabbaṃ
• 5. Dhātumanasikārapabbaṃ
• 6 to 14. Navasivathikapabbaṃ
• Kāyānupassanā ānāpānapabbaṃ
• ‘‘Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī
viharati? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araññagato vā
rukkhamūlagato vā suññāgāragato vā nisīdati,
pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā, ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇidhāya,
parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā.
• And how, monks, does a monk dwell observing body in
body?
Here a monk, having gone into the forest, or to the foot
of a tree, or to an empty room, sits down cross-legged,
keeps
his body upright and fixes his awareness towards the
meditation object.
• So satova assasati, satova passasati. Dīghaṃ vā
assasanto ‘dīghaṃ assasāmī’ti pajānāti, dīghaṃ vā
passasanto ‘dīghaṃ passasāmī’ti pajānāti, rassaṃ
vā assasanto ‘rassaṃ assasāmī’ti pajānāti, rassaṃ
vā passasanto ‘rassaṃ passasāmī’ti pajānāti,
‘sabbakāyapaṭisaṃvedī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati,
‘sabbakāyapaṭisaṃvedī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati,
‘passambhayaṃ kāyasaṅkhāraṃ assasissāmī’ti
sikkhati, ‘passambhayaṃ kāyasaṅkhāraṃ
passasissāmī’ti sikkhati.
• With this awareness, he breathes in, with this
awareness, he breathes out.

• Breathing in a long breath, he knows  ‘I breathe in long,’ Breathing out a long


breath, he knows, ‘I breathe out long.’

• Breathing in a short breath, he knows, ‘I breathe in short.’


• Breathing out a short breath, he knows, I breathe out short.
 
• Clearly aware of the entire in-breath-body,I shall breathe in,’ so he trains himself;
• Clearly aware of the entire out-breath-body,I shall breathe out,’ so he trains
himself..
 
• Calming   the gross in-breath.  I shall breathe in,’ so he trains himself..
• Calming the gross out-breath I shall breathe out,’ so he trains himself.

• 1. Meditation object: In-breath and out-breath. At the tip
of the nostril. 安修所缘:在鼻端上呼吸的进出
• Why ānāpānasati 为什么要修入出息念?

• 2. Relaxation physically and metally. No stiffness and


stress in body and mind. 身心放松,不能让身心僵硬,紧张,
有压力
• 3. Preliminary works. Preparation for body and mind.
初步阶段:如何准备对待自己的身心?
• 4. How to breath? Breath as you normally breath
naturally at a normal time.
如何呼吸?普通的,自然的呼吸,就像你平时一样。

Why ānāpānasati ?
• . Sāvatthinidānaṃ. Tatra kho…pe… etadavoca – ekadhammo, bhikkhave, bhāvito bahulīkato
mahapphalo hoti mahānisaṃso. . Katamo ekadhammo?
• At Sāvatthī.
• “Mendicants, when one thing is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. What
one thing? Mindfulness of breathing.
• Ānāpānassati . Kathaṃ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati katha ṃ bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti
mahānisaṃsā?
• And how is mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated to be very fruitful and
beneficial? 。在那里……(中略)说这个:“比库们,一法已修习,已多做,有大果,大效益。哪一法呢?
• Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araññagato vā rukkhamūlagato vā suññāgāragato vā nisīdati palla ṅka ṃ
ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇidhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā. So satova assasati, satova
passasati.
• It’s when a mendicant has gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut.
They sit down cross-legged, with their body straight, and establish mindfulness right there.
• Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out.
• 比库们!这里,到林野,或到树下,或到空屋的比库坐下盘腿,定置端直的身体,建立面前的念后,他只
具念地吸气,只具念地呼气。

• So satova assasati, satova [sato (bahūsu)
tatiyapārājikepi] passasati. Dīghaṃ vā assasanto
‘dīghaṃ assasāmī’ti pajānāti, dīghaṃ vā passasanto
‘dīghaṃ passasāmī’ti pajānāti; rassaṃ vā assasanto
‘rassaṃ assasāmī’ti pajānāti, rassaṃ vā passasanto
‘rassaṃ passasāmī’ti pajānāti;
• 他只具念地吸氣、只具念地呼氣:
•   當吸氣長時,知道:『我吸氣長。』或當呼
氣長時,知道:『我呼氣長。』
•   當吸氣短時,知道:『我吸氣短。』或當呼
氣短時,知道:『我呼氣短。』
• ‘sabbakāyappaṭisaṃvedī assasissāmī’ti
sikkhati, ‘sabbakāyappaṭisaṃvedī
passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;
• 學習:『經驗著一切身,我將吸氣。』學
習:『經驗著一切身,我將呼氣。
• ‘passambhayaṃ kāyasaṅkhāraṃ assasissāmī’ti
sikkhati, ‘passambhayaṃ kāyasaṅkhāraṃ
passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;
• 學習:『使身行寧靜著,我將吸氣。』學
習:『使身行寧靜著,我將呼氣。』
Kāyānupassanā iriyāpathapabbaṃ
• ‘‘Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave,
bhikkhu gacchanto vā
‘gacchāmī’ti pajānāti, ṭhito vā
‘ṭhitomhī’ti pajānāti, nisinno vā
‘nisinnomhī’ti pajānāti, sayāno vā
‘sayānomhī’ti pajānāti.
Iriyāpathapabbavaṇṇanā

• Kiṃ kāraṇā gacchatīti cittakiriyavāyodhātuvipphārena gacchati. Tasmā


esa evaṃ pajānāti ‘‘gacchāmī’’ti cittaṃ uppajjati, taṃ vāyaṃ janeti,
vāyo viññattiṃ janeti, cittakiriyavāyodhātuvipphārena sakalakāyassa
purato abhinīhāro gamananti vuccati. Ṭhānādīsupi eseva nayo.
• Tatrāpi hi ‘‘tiṭṭhāmī’’ti cittaṃ uppajjati, taṃ vāyaṃ janeti, vāyo
viññattiṃ janeti, cittakiriyavāyodhātuvipphārena sakalakāyassa koṭito
paṭṭhāya ussitabhāvo ṭhānanti vuccati. ‘‘Nisīdāmī’’ti cittaṃ uppajjati,
taṃ vāyaṃ janeti, vāyo viññattiṃ janeti,
cittakiriyavāyodhātuvipphārena heṭṭhimakāyassa samiñjanaṃ
uparimakāyassa ussitabhāvo nisajjāti vuccati. ‘‘Sayāmī’’ti cittaṃ
uppajjati, taṃ vāyaṃ janeti, vāyo viññattiṃ janeti,
cittakiriyavāyodhātuvipphārena sakalasarīrassa tiriyato pasāraṇaṃ
sayananti vuccatīti.
Kāyānupassanā sampajānapabbaṃ

• ‘‘Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu


abhikkante paṭikkante sampajānakārī hoti,
ālokite vilokite sampajānakārī hoti, samiñjite
pasārite sampajānakārī hoti,
saṅghāṭipattacīvaradhāraṇe sampajānakārī
hoti, asite pīte khāyite sāyite sampajānakārī
hoti, uccārapassāvakamme sampajānakārī
hoti, gate ṭhite nisinne sutte jāgarite bhāsite
tuṇhībhāve sampajānakārī hoti.
• Tattha sātthakasampajaññaṃ sappāyasampajaññaṃ
gocarasampajaññaṃ asammohasampajaññanti
catubbidhaṃ sampajaññaṃ. Tattha abhikkamanacitte
uppanne cittavaseneva agantvā ‘‘kiṃ nu me ettha gatena
attho atthi natthī’’ti atthānatthaṃ pariggaṇhitvā
atthapariggahaṇaṃ sātthakasampajaññaṃ. Tattha ca
atthoti
cetiyadassanabodhidassanasaṅghadassanatheradassanaas
ubhadassanādivasena dhammato vaḍḍhi. Cetiyaṃ vā
bodhiṃ vā disvāpi hi buddhārammaṇaṃ saṅghadassanena
saṅghārammaṇaṃ pītiṃ uppādetvā tadeva khayavayato
sammasanto arahattaṃ pāpuṇāti. There disvā tesaṃ ovāde
patiṭṭhāya asubhaṃ disvā tattha paṭhamajjhānaṃ
uppādetvā tadeva khayavayato sammasanto arahattaṃ
pāpuṇāti. Tasmā etesaṃ dassanaṃ sātthakaṃ.
• ‘cittasaṅkhārappaṭisaṃvedī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati,
‘cittasaṅkhārappaṭisaṃvedī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;
• 學習:『經驗著心行,我將吸氣。』學習:『經驗
著心行,我將呼氣。』
• ‘passambhayaṃ cittasaṅkhāraṃ assasissāmī’ti sikkhati,
‘passambhayaṃ cittasaṅkhāraṃ passasissāmī’ti
sikkhati;
•   學習:『使心行寧靜著,我將吸氣。』學習:
『使心行寧靜著,我將呼氣。』
• ‘cittappaṭisaṃvedī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati,
‘cittappaṭisaṃvedī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;
• 學習:『經驗著心,我將吸氣。』學習:『經驗著
心,我將呼氣。』
• Tatiya Catukka B
• ‘cittappaṭisaṃvedī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘cittappaṭisaṃvedī
passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;
• ‘abhippamodayaṃ cittaṃ assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘abhippamodayaṃ cittaṃ
passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;
• ‘samādahaṃ cittaṃ assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘samādahaṃ cittaṃ
passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;
• ‘vimocayaṃ cittaṃ assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘vimocayaṃ cittaṃ
passasissāmī’ti sikkhati; ‘aniccānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati,

• They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in gladdening the mind.’ They practice
like this: ‘I’ll breathe out gladdening the mind.’
• They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in immersing the mind in samādhi.’
They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out immersing the mind in samādhi.’
They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in freeing the mind.’ They practice like
this: ‘I’ll breathe out freeing the mind.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe
in observing impermanence.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out
observing impermanence.’

‘paṭinissaggānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati,
‘paṭinissaggānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati. Evaṃ
bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati evaṃ bahulīkatā
mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṃsā’’ti. Paṭhamaṃ.
