States of Matter

This document provides information about the topic of matter for 5th grade science, including defining matter as anything that takes up space, classifying the three states of matter as solids, liquids, and gases, and explaining the properties of each state in terms of shape, volume, and particle movement and attraction. Examples are given of different materials that are solids, liquids, or gases, and students are asked questions to check their understanding of defining matter and classifying states of matter.

Subject : Science
Grade:5
Chapter # 2
Topic: Matter
Prepared by Ms Talat Sultana
SLO# 3.1
• 3.1.1 Define matter and also gives its properties

SLO# 3.2
• 3.2.1 Classify state of matter(Solid, Liquid and Gas)

• Explain solid, liquid and gas on the basis of space of

particle, shape, volume and force of attraction.

What is Matter?

• The basic definition:

• Matter is anything that takes up space.
What are the States of Matter?

• There are three states of matter: solids, liquids,

and gases.
What is a Solid?

• A solid is the simplest state of matter.

• A solid has these three main properties:

• It has a definite shape.
• It has a definite mass.
• It has a definite volume.

• A solid will always look the same and take up the same
amount of space.
Examples of Solids:

Basketball

Colored Pencils Chair

What is a Liquid?

• A liquid is the most fluid and ever-changing state of

matter

• A liquid has these three main properties:

• It does not have a definite shape.
• It has a definite mass.
• It has a definite volume.

A liquid will always take up the same amount of space

and
take the shape of its container.
Examples of Liquids:
Cough Syrup

Orange Juice
Salad Dressing
What is a Gas?
• A gas is the most complex and difficult to understand
state of matter

• A gas has these three main properties:

• It does not have a definite shape.
• It does not have a definite mass.
• It does not have a definite volume.

• A gas does not always weigh the same or take up the same
amount of space.
• However, like a liquid, a gas will always take the shape of
its container, no matter the size or shape of that
container.
Examples of Gases:

Air

Smoke
On your worksheet, decide whether
these items are solids, liquids, or gases.

Steam

water bottle

Vinegar
M&Ms Milk
Key Points:
• Matter is anything is anything that has mass and takes up
space.
• The three states of matter are:
• solids, liquids and gases.
• Solids:
• have a definite shape, mass and volume.
• Liquids:
• have a definite mass and volume, but not shape.
• Gases:
• do not have a definite mass, volume, or shape.
