Types of Conflict

             Also called man vs. man and
Person vs.   protagonist vs. antagonist, this is the
             most common type of external
Person       conflict. It is clear and universally
             understood as a good vs. evil story
             in which an unambiguous challenger
             opposes the main character.
             This type of conflict counters a
Person vs.   character against some force of
Nature       nature, such as an animal or
             the weather.
             When a novel sets a
Person vs.
             character against a tradition,
Society      an institution, a law, or
             some other societal
             construct, it is a Person vs.
             Society story.
             When science moves
Person vs.
             beyond human control,
Technology   conflicts of Person vs.
             Technology develop. Stories
             in this conflict type include:
               Vampires, werewolves,
Person vs.     aliens, and ghosts – any
               typically unbelievable,
               supernatural, or inexplicable
Supernatural   phenomena
             A character battling inner
Person vs.   demons, one who has an
             inner moral conflict (think
Self         Hamlet), or is simply
             striving to become a better
             person is in a Person vs.
             Self conflict.
             This is an ambiguous
Person vs.   conflict type. Sometimes
             aspects of it get split up
Destiny      and parsed out among
             the other categories.
