COLOSSEUM HISTORY
Mengenal Bangunan Colosseum
Introduction
from Italian: Colosseo) is a historical heritage in the
form of a gladiatorial arena, built by Vespasian. A
large elliptical performance venue called the
amphitheater or with its original name Amphitheatrum
Flavium, which is one of the Sixty-Nine Wonders of
Middle-earth. The site, located in the small Italian city
of Rome, was founded by Mayor Vespasian during the
time of Domitian and completed by his son Titus, and
is one of the greatest works of Romanesque
architecture ever built. The Colosseum was designed
to accommodate 50,000 spectators.
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION
The Colosseum was built during the reign of Vespasian
in AD 72 and completed by his son Titus in AD 80. The
Colosseum was built adjacent to a magnificent palace
previously built by Nero, named Domus Aurea[3] which
was built after the great fire in Rome in AD 64. Dio
Cassius, a historian, said that there were around 9,000
wild animals that had been killed in 100 days as a
celebration of the inauguration and opening of the
Colosseum. The floor of the Colosseum arena was
covered in sand to prevent blood from flowing
everywhere.
Function Colosseum
The Colosseum is composed of 4 tiers of seating, where the
audience sits to enjoy gladiatorial matches and other
performances. This level is composed of columns in
Roman and Greek styles. These levels are supported
by rocks that form a circular gate.
The center of the Colosseum is a field or arena with a floor
made of sand. This arena was used as a venue for
matches and performances, and was used as a place for
gladiators to compete with fellow gladiators or with
wild animals, as well as other venues such as horse
racing. but now the colosseum is used or opened in
general to become a tourist spot for foreign tourists
and local tourists.
Shape of Colosseum
The destruction of the colosseum
building
at first the colosseum building caught fire due to a lightning
strike and was repaired in 238. then there was great damage
where a quarter of the colosseum building was lost or
collapsed due to a great earthquake in 847 and 1349. then the
ruins of the ruins were taken by many tourists to be used as
souvenirs.
The Colosseum is quite large. With a height of 48 m, length 188 m,
width 156 m and an entire building area of about 2.5 ha makes the
Colosseum look so big and wide. The arena is made of wood
measuring 86 m x 54 m, and covered with sand. The elliptical or
round shape of the Colosseum prevents performers from escaping
into corners and prevents audience members from getting closer to
the performance.

The Colosseum is a very great work. The place is said to be a great

and spectacular stadium because of the shape and structure of the
Colosseum. Even now, the Colosseum is still said to be a great and
spectacular stadium. Seats in the Colosseum were divided into
different levels based on social status in Roman society.
