Work From Home

Work from home or WFH allows employees to perform their jobs remotely using company-approved tools and resources. It provides flexibility for employees and helps companies complete work efficiently. Most employers now offer WFH options. While it has benefits like savings, reduced commute time, and independence, it also has disadvantages such as household distractions, lack of human contact, potential work-life imbalance, and burnout risks. The future of remote work is promising with advances in technology enabling improved connectivity, security, and flexibility. Tata Consultancy Services, one of India's largest IT companies, smoothly transitioned to a fully remote model during COVID-19 while facing some adjustment challenges for employees.

telecommuting which implies that the employee is
working from a remote location usually home.
BENEFITS OF REMOTE WORKING
FOR EMPLOYEES
• SAVING IN EXTRA EXPENSES

One of the advantages of remote working is the saving of extra

expenses . In India , apart from rent , travelling is the second major
expenses for most employees.

also, employees spend extra in the office cafeteria , on petrol price ,

toll fees , and other miscellaneous items. With work from home , all
such extra expenses have been limited.
• EXCLUSION OF COMMUTE TIME

Employees who had to travel for a minimum of 2 hours or more on

workdays used to feel drained on finally reaching the office.

One of the advantages of working from home is doing away with

travelling time . This saves time and gives way to better productivity
as you don’t need to travel to the office.
• MORE INDEPENDENCE

In a normal office environment, you find yourself between tasks a lot and get many opinions on a task's priority.
But during remote working, with proper time management and discipline, you have more independence regarding
your work .This can help you to add your flair to your work, prioritize your tasks, and take ownership of the tasks
assigned to you.
• IMPROVED COMMUNICATION

Effective communication at the workplace requires clarity in context , active listening , etc . During the normal
office days , you could communicate face-to-face which used to keep miscommunication at bay. However , when
working from home , you need to go the extra mile while communicating to keep the team updated about
progress, hiccups , etc. so that the team can be on the same page in terms of work progress. A normal office
environment, you find yourself switching between tasks a lot and get many opinions on a task's priority. But
during remote working, with proper time management and discipline, you have more independence regarding
your work. This can help you to add your flair to your work, prioritize your tasks, and take ownership of the tasks
assigned to you.
• BETTER PRODUCTIVITY

One of the advantages of working from home

is the absence of the usual office distractions.
A quieter ambiance helps to get done with
the work faster and more peacefully. All it
requires is good time management and a To-
Do list to keep track of priority tasks.
• MORE FLEXIBILITY

Another work from home advantage is work

flexibility. Without having to travel for work,
employees can save up a lot of time and
work as per their most productive hours.
DISADVANTAGES OF WORKING FROM HOME FOR
EMPLOYEES

• DISTRACTIONS WITHIN THE HOUSEHOLD

It is true that when working from home there are no office distractions, but home comes
with its own distractions. The home comprises of family members and it is natural that
there will be disturbances. You can inform your family members to hold off discussions
for post-work hours, lock the door to your workspace or even use noise-canceling
earphones to keep noises at bay.
• LACK OF HUMAN CONTACT

One of the biggest disadvantages of working from home is the lack of face-to-face
communication with friends and colleagues. Communication with other people helps us
feel involved, but without it, loneliness and a feeling of isolation take over. To avoid
isolation, you can choose to have a video call or voice call with your colleagues and
friends.
• DISTRUPTION IN WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Another one of the disadvantages of remote working is the lack of work-life balance.
Working from home can dissolve the demarcation between work hours and personal life for
various reasons .To maintain a healthy work-life balance, it is best to create a clear
demarcation between work hours and personal time .Try to start your work the same time
you would when in the office and complete your tasks within those hours. Avoid work calls
post-work hours unless absolutely urgent.
• RISK OF FEELING BURNT OUT

With the reasons for applying for leaves diminishing, the risk of burnout becomes one of the
biggest disadvantages of working from home.It is best to take a day or two off when you find
yourself anxious or if you feel extremely low and simply need to unwind. Take this time to
do what you love to do, meditate, etc., but do keep your gadgets away as it will negate the
resting process.
Work from Home jobs vs Work from
Office jobs?
• Working from home and working from office both have their own set of pros and cons.
While work from home offers efficiency and avoids a long commute, office work
provides a better environment for communication, collaboration and overall growth of
one’s career. Working from home presents us with the opportunity to have a balanced
work-life while still being successful professionally. It is increasingly becoming the
new normal and it brings with it many benefits, both professionally and personally. It
adds a level of convenience that’s not typically afforded by traditional work
environments, enabling them to make more mindful and intentional use of their most
valuable asset: time. This flexibility is vital for anyone hoping to break away from the
normal grind and achieve something new and exciting. Even most of the big companies
like Infosys, TCS, Facebook, Google, let employee decide if he/she wants to work from
home. Employee has the discretion to work from office or work from home whenever
he wants. Some of the organisations adopt 25 by 25 operating model where they make
sure that employees work in office at office in atleast 25% of their time.
Working from home has its benefits but after a long time,
employees miss the office environment. Everyone looks
forward to reconnecting with their colleagues, being part of
team projects, having interesting conversations across
departments and taking part in civic events at the office.People
miss the familiarity of having a dedicated workspace; it's hard to
be productive and efficient when working from home in
uncomfortable or distracting environments. Moreover, there’s a
special value that comes with face-to -face interaction which
technology solutions just can't bring. Working with human
interaction allows for more creativity and innovation as
compared to work alone from home. Having restricted social
contact for so long creates a yearning for meeting people face-
to-face, which cannot be replaced with video chatting through
computers. A healthy work culture is essential for companies for
covering the trust factor among employers and employees.
What’s the future of work-from-home in
2023?
• The future of remote work is an exciting prospect. It has been a staple of modern living
since the inception of the internet, and it is growing in popularity as technology
advances. The remote work landscape is expected to look much different than it does
today. With the rise of virtual reality, 5G technology, and AI-powered software,
professionals around the world will benefit from enhanced connectivity, improved
security, and greater flexibility when it comes to working from home. From
teleconferencing to online collaboration, this new era of remote work will bring about
opportunities for people to work from virtually anywhere. As the boundaries of tradit
ional office space dissipate, the potential for a more streamlined and efficient remote
work experience will become a reality.
