Plastic Waste Management
• What is Plastic: Plastics are integral part of society and have varied application. Plastics are composed of a
network of molecular monomers bound together to form macromolecules. There are increasing concerns due to
non degradability and generation of toxic gases on combustion during incineration.
• How it affects Nature: Over 300 million metric tons of plastics are produced in the world annually and
about fifty percent of this volume is for disposal applications. Although there are multiple uses, its waste and the
resultant pollution clogs up our rivers, oceans, lands and adversely affects the biodiversity.
• How can we manage the waste: The International Organisation for standardization [ISO] Organisation
for Economic Cooperation [OECD] and development, British specification [BS] Indian Standards [IS] need to be
implemented for appropriate application and safe disposal. Globally steps are being taken for development of
environmental friendly, innovative plastic items using the concept of green chemistry and also with safe disposal
  methods.
                                                                                                                         5
As plastic waste disposal is a serious concern in India, new technologies have been developed to minimize its
adverse effect.
                                                                                                                6
The three R’s
We've all heard of the 3 Rs of the environment: reduce, reuse, recycle, but do we practice what we preach? The 3 Rs
— Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle — have been around for awhile.
       REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE
Purchase products that Use a travel mug or reusable Paper, plastic, glass,
require less packaging or to water bottle and avoid single- magazines, electronics, and
limit the waste you are use bags. more can be processed into
producing. new products while using
                                                                                 fewer natural resources and
                                                                                 less energy.
                                                                                                                      7

 Case study: Aarohana Ecosocial Development
“A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends
 otherwise.” – Aldo Leopold.
• Aarohana Ecosocial Developments is an endeavour born out of a similar wanting to change the face of our
priceless natural surroundings, culture and heritage for better, in the face of rampant commercialization and
  environmental pollution.
• Their two core areas of work namely “Conserving our Environment and Heritage” and “Enabling Rural
Livelihoods” are geared to achieve this very model. Through these broad areas, the institute focus on projects
related to waste management, clean energy, education, health, water conservation, sanitation, environment and
heritage conservation; and all this through sustainable livelihood generation.
                                                                                                                                      9

“ “If it can’t be reduced, reused, repaired, rebuilt, refurbished, refinished, resold, recycled, or composted,
then it should be restricted, designed or removed from production.”
