What is Volcano??
A volcano is an opening in the earth’s
surface that allows magma (hot liquid
and semi-liquid rock), volcanic ash and
gases to escape. They are generally
found where tectonic plates come
together or separate, but they can also
occur in the middle of plates due to
volcanic hotspots.
What is volcanic Eruption?
A volcanic eruption is when gas and/or lava are
released from a volcano—sometimes explosively.
Volcanoes provide a number of environmental
benefits, for example: fertile soils, hydrothermal
energy, and precious minerals. But they also pose
several hazards: volcanic ash, gases, lahars (mud
flows), landslides, lava flows, and pyroclastic flows
(fast-moving currents of hot gas). Volcanic
eruptions can be deadly and often cause
population displacement and food shortages.
Positive Effects of Volcanoes
★Geothermal
energy is where heat from within the Earth is used to generate
electricity. Geothermal energy can be generated in areas where
magma
lies close to the surface. This is good for increasing renewable
energy use.
★Ash ejected by the volcano acts as a good fertiliser for soils.
Volcanoes attract many tourists, who enjoy the dramatic scenery
that they produce.
Rising magma brings valuable minerals to the surface, creating
mining opportunities.
Negative effect of Volcano
Volcanoes are dangerous. They can kill people and
damage property.
Economic activity can suffer as it is hard for
businesses to operate after an eruption.
Habitats and landscapes are damaged by
lava
flows.
Why do people live near to the Volcano?
People choose to live in volcanic areas despite the risks of an eruption.
Volcanoes can provide people with many benefits such as:
volcanic rock and ash provide fertile land which results in a higher crop yield
for farmers,
tourists are attracted to the volcano, which increases money to the local
economy, geothermal energy can be harnessed, which provides free
electricity for locals, minerals are contained in lava, eg diamonds - this can be
mined to make money.
What to do before volcanic eruption?
What to do before volcanic eruption?
Be prepared either to shelter or to
evacuate. Develop an evacuation plan and
a sheltering plan for yourself, your family,
and others in your household. Review the
plans and make sure that everyone
understands them. If you haven't already
done so, put together an emergency supply
kit .
What to do during volcanic eruption?
What to do during a volcanic eruption
Listen to the radio for civil defence advice and
follow instructions. If outside at the time of
eruption, seek shelter in a car or a building. If
caught in volcanic ashfalls, wear a dust mask or
use a handkerchief or cloth over your nose and
mouth.Stay indoors as volcanic ash is a health
hazard, especially if you have respiratory
difficulties such as asthma or bronchitis. When
indoors, close all windows and doors to limit the
entry of volcanic ash. Place damp towels at
thresholds.
What to do during volcanic eruption?
Do not tie up phone lines with non-emergency calls.
If you have to go outside use protective gear such as
masks and goggles and keep as much of your skin covered
as possible. Wear eyeglasses, not contact lenses as these
can cause corneal abrasions.
Disconnect drainpipes/downspouts from gutters to stop
drains clogging. If you use a rainwater collection system
for your water supply, disconnect the tank.
Stay out of designated restricted zones.
What to do after Volcanic eruption?
After a volcanic eruption
Continue listening to a NOAA weather radio or TV
for the latest information.
Remain inside your home until officials declare it
is safe to leave.
Inspect your home: ...
When outside, avoid volcanic ash fall. ...
Clear roofs of ash fall. ...
Avoid making phone calls except in serious
emergencies.
Thankyou for listening:)
