FORM COMPOSITION
FORM COMPOSITION PROCESS
THE PROCESS OF CONVERTING THE APPROXIAMATE AREA OUTLINES OF THE
FUNCTIONAL DIGRAM(BUBBLE DIAGRAM) TO SPECIFIC FORMS (VISUAL THEMES)
TO CREATE VISUAL ORDER (ORDER,UNITY,RHYTHM)
OR

CIRCLE
THE GEOMETRY OF FORM
The CIRCLE
- Because of simplicity and
completeness, often
described as the most pure or
perfect form.
- It is unique. Natural.
- Facing outward in all directions
THE GEOMETRY OF FORM
The CIRCLE
COMPONENTS USED IN FORM COMPOSITION:
1. Center – the most important for it attracts
attention; creates strong relationship with the
other components
2. Circumference
3. Radii
4. Extended radii
5. Diameter
6. Tangent

THE GEOMETRY OF FORM
The SQUARE
- Often considered a human-made form
because its made out of straight lines and not
found in nature.
- It is formal because of its symmetrical
nature having equal sides which
suggests an axes.
- Has four direction only unlike the
circle.

RECTANGULAR THEME Rectangular and modified diagonal
DIAGONAL THEMES
Pure diagonal (60 to 45 degrees)
Modified diagonal

COMBINING FORMS:
FORM-TO-FORM RELATIONSHIPS
GUIDELINES:
1. ALIGNING FORM COMPONENTS
- component part of each form coincide, or be
aligned, with the location of the component part of
adjoining form.
Creating the visual theme
COMBINING FORMS:
FORM-TO-FORM RELATIONSHIPS
GUIDELINES:
2. AVOIDING ACUTE ANGLES
- avoid the creation of disturbing acute angles that is
less than 45 degrees angle.
- acute angle creates visual tension, breaks or cracks at
corner, difficult to grow shrub or ground cover, and is
useless; produces wastage area.
Creating the visual theme
COMBINING FORMS:
FORM-TO-FORM RELATIONSHIPS
GUIDELINES:
3. ESTABLISHING FORM IDENTITY
- ability of individual forms to be identifiable and
legible as distinct form.
Creating the visual theme
COMBINING FORMS:
FORM-TO-FORM RELATIONSHIPS
GUIDELINES:
4. FORM DOMINATION
- To have one form to dominate the composition to
create strong form identity, creates visual accent and
resting place for the eye.

CONSIDERATIONS:
1. Geometry of form
2. Desired Feeling of character of design
3. Relationship to existing structures
4. Relationship to the functional diagram
Form composition process
PROCESS:
1. BEGIN WITH THE FUNCTIONAL DIAGRAM
2. SELECTION OF VISUAL THEME TO COMBINE FORMS BASED ON
THE FOLLOWING:
a. Desired character and/or style of the design (formal, informal, relaxing or stimulating,
contemporary, historic..)
b. Appropriateness to the architectural style of the house
c. Appropriateness to the exiting condition of the sit
d. Preference of the clients
3. DEVELOPING THE FORM
Form composition process
PROCESS:
3. DEVELOPING THE FORM
a. Relationship of form to structure by relating the edges to the existing
elements of the structure by drawing the line of force as guide to
connecting the structure to the proposed compositional form:
- PRIMARY – outside walls and corners of the structure
- SECONDARY – edges on outside walls that touches the ground surface such as
doors.
- TERTIARY – edges on outside walls that do not touch the ground surface, such
as windows..
