HOW DO WE
CRITICIZE?
                  Activity 1
What is the latest film or TV show you have
watched? Which song have you listened to
lately? Which fast food chain or restaurant
have you dined in recently? Which gadget have
you used?
Choose a subject that you can evaluate or
may have already evaluated (e.g., a film you
have watched recently), and recall both
positive and negative aspects of that subject.

      WHAT IS EVALUATION
                 PAPER?
What you have accomplished is an informal
evaluation of the subject you have chosen.
You may not know it but when you explore both
negative and positive aspects of a subject, you
are making an evaluation- a critical process of
examining a subject thoroughly by considering
its strengths and weaknesses in order to
put value in it, whether it is generally good or
     WHAT IS EVALUATION
                PAPER?
Evaluation entails critical thinking. Critical
thinking is a complex, intellectual process of
carefully analyzing and/or evaluating
information at hand. This means that when one
evaluates, he/she must examine all aspects of
the subject carefully, suspend judgment until
all details have been thoroughly scrutinized,
and dismiss any prejudices arising before,

WRITING THE
 CRITICAL
EVALUATION
  PAPER
STEP 1: Explore possible topics
-What topic interests me and my
readers?
-What subject is relevant to evaluate
and discuss?
-What topic can be relatable in my
field of specialization (strand)?
-What topic is neither too good nor too
bad?
STEP 2: Establishing
Standards/ Criteria for
Evaluation
A valid judgment is based upon
universally-acceptable standards or
criteria that serve as the basis for
evaluation. In evaluating a vocal
performance, for example, judges
base their decision on the set criteria
Step 3: Doing Fieldwork
  It involves the actual
gathering of data and
supporting evidence for the
evaluation.
Step 4: Making a
Claim/Judgement
The claim is the overall judgment of
the subject-good or bad, fair or unfair,
effective or not.
Example:
    Despite the overwhelming audience
reception and advanced visual and sound
effects, the mouse failed to deliver an
unpredictable, compelling acting, and a
Step 5: Organizing
Fieldwork Data
  After thoroughly
examining the subject,
organize your notes into an
outline.
