The EDSA People
Power Revolution
(1986)
The EDSA People Power Revolution (1986)
was a peaceful uprising that led to the
overthrow of Ferdinand Marcos's 20-year
dictatorship, restored democracy in the
Philippines, and became a symbol of non-
violent resistance against oppressive
regimes.
Social
Transformation
The EDSA People Power Revolution was a significant display
of peaceful protests that brought together Filipinos from
various social backgrounds, religions, and regions. This
movement highlighted the strength of collective action and
civil disobedience, with millions of Filipinos uniting to
demand the removal of a dictator and the return of
democracy. It created a sense of national solidarity and
showcased the Filipino people's ability to challenge
oppression.
Cultural Shift:
Culturally, the revolution marked a major change in
how Filipinos viewed authority and governance. It
signified a move away from a culture of fear and
submission under Martial Law to one of assertiveness
and empowerment. The revolution also reinforced the
values of democracy, freedom, and human rights,
which became more deeply ingrained in Filipino society.
Political Change:
Politically, the EDSA Revolution resulted in
the overthrow of President Ferdinand
Marcos, ending his 20-year dictatorship. It
led to the formation of a new government
under President Corazon Aquino, the first
female president of the Philippines. This
event also brought about the creation of
the 1987 Constitution, which introduced
democratic reforms, restored civil liberties,
and limited the powers of the executive
branch to prevent future authoritarian rule.
