Chinese New Year, also called Lunar New Year
or Spring Festival, is the most important
holiday in China, and it’s celebrated with lots of
cool traditions. Here are some of the most
common ones:
Decorations: People decorate their homes and
streets with red lanterns, banners, and good
luck phrases on red paper because red is for
good luck and protection from bad spirits. You’ll
also see pictures of the zodiac animal for the
new year.
Food: Food is a big deal during the celebrations.
Families get together for a huge dinner on New
Year’s Eve. Traditional dishes include fish,
dumplings, noodles, spring rolls, and sticky rice
cakes (niangao). Each dish has a special

Special Clothes: People wear new clothes,
especially red ones, to bring good luck.
Wearing new stuff is like starting fresh and
driving away bad vibes.
Gifts: A big tradition is giving hongbao, or
red envelopes with money inside. These are
given by older people to the younger ones as
a way to wish them luck and prosperity for
the new year.
Celebrations: There are parades with
dragons and lions, fireworks, and lots of
music and dancing. The fireworks are meant
to scare away bad spirits.

Gifts: Gift-giving is a central part of the
celebration. Presents are placed under the
Christmas tree and opened on the morning of
December 25th. Children often write letters to
Santa Claus asking for gifts, and it's believed
that Santa delivers the presents on Christmas
Eve, traveling in a sleigh pulled by reindeer.
Special Clothes: There isn't a specific
traditional outfit, but it's common for people to
wear Christmas sweaters, scarves, or hats with
festive designs. During family gatherings,
many choose comfortable or formal attire.
