STRAWBERRIES FROM PANCHGANI
TRANSPORT & COMMUNICATION
• The Mahabaleshwar strawberry is grown mainly in the hilly Mahabaleshwar-
Panchgani belt in western Maharashtra. As of late 2015, it is grown in an
estimated area of 3,000 acres with about 30,000 metric tonnes of the fruit being
produced annuall.
• The transport of fresh products generally takes place in (refrigerated) trucks,
reefer containers or by plane. Checks and proper loading are always important to
maintain good (temperature) conditions for the product during transport. For
strawberries, refrigerated transport is often necessary.
BANKING & FINANCE
• Banking is an important aid to trade because it helps facilitate the flow of funds, provides
credit, and offers other financial services that support trade activities.
• Credit: Banks provide credit to businesses, which helps ensure that funds are readily
available.

INSURANCE
• Agriculture insurance is a relevant mechanism to manage risks to help farmers to avoid
financial losses and keep their businesses running. It aims to reduce the financial risk and
uncertainty faced by farmers and help them manage their production and income more
effectively
• The insurance also covers losses for up to two weeks after harvesting. Farmers get insurance
against Dry spells, floods, hailstorms, cyclones, and typhoons are all examples of non-
preventable risks that might result in yield losses. They all are covered under a crop insurance
plan, the policy covers any loss to the property, farm produce etc.

WAREHOUSING
• Strawberries should be packed in plastic punnets, then placed in corrugated fiber
trays or ventilated cardboard boxes. For long distance markets, good quality
strawberries should be packed in perforated cardboard cartons with paper
cuttings for cushioning. Lower quality strawberries can be packed in baskets.
• Since strawberry is perishable in nature, warehouses provide a cool place to store
them as a temperature of 2 to 4c is required for storage. It also receives and
processes incoming stock and materials ,picks and fills orders from stock, packing
and shipping orders and manages, organizes and retrieves stock. Receiving,
storage, picking, packing, and shipping are also some functions. These are very
important as strawberry is exported a lot inside the country or area as well as
internationally and this function requires a lot of transporting and safe storage
procedure
ADVERTISING
• In 2010, the All India Strawberry Grower's Association registered the strawberries
from the region under the GI of Goods Act, 1999. This gives the strawberries a
brand name and helps producers export them to other countries.
• Festivals
• The region celebrates the strawberry harvest with festivals that include
strawberry picking, tasting, and cultural activities.
• Farm tours
• Visitors can tour the farms and pick strawberries themselves
