TROPICAL
CYCLONES
Presented by: Brendalyn R. Baribad
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a.) Identify what is tropical cyclone;
b.) Describe the structures of tropical cyclone;
c.) Analyze the impacts of tropical cyclones on the
environment and human activities; and
d.) Appreciate the importance pf preparedness and
safety measures during a tropical cyclone.
WAIT, LET’S
RECALL!
Are you still familiar with the different calamities that
happened in the Philippines? If yes, try to recall them by
simply re-arrange the jumbled words presented to you.
Write your answer in a ¼ sheet of paper.

WHAT IS TROPICAL
CYCLONE?
Tropical cyclones are the intense low-pressure storm systems that bring
strong winds and heavy rain.
• In short, they are powerful storm systems characterized by low
atmospheric pressure, strong winds, and heavy rainfall.
• They typically form over warm ocean waters and can cause
significant damage when they make landfall, leading to flooding,
wind damage, and other hazards.
WHAT ARE THE
THREE MAIN
TYPES OF
TROPICAL
CYCLONE?
Hurricanes
A hurricane is a tropical storm system that is characterized by
strong winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles
per hour or more.
They form over bodies of water and rotate rapidly.
Hurricanes are tropical cyclones that form in the North
Atlantic and Eastern North of the Pacific Ocean.
TYPHOONS
When we say typhoons, it is defined as a
tropical cyclone with the maximum wind of 34
knots or higher.
• Typhoons are also those that form in the
Western North of the Pacific Ocean.
CYCLONES
Cyclones are form in the Western
South Indian Ocean.
Cyclones a storm or system of winds
that rotates about a center of low
atmospheric pressure.
STRUCTURE OF TROPICAL
CYCLONERain Bands
The Eye
The Eye Wall
STRUCTURE OF TROPICAL
CYCLONE
• The eye is the center of the
spiral that extends about 30 to
60 kilometers in diameter.
The Eye
Meaning to say, it is a central
region of clear skies, warm
temperatures, and low atmospheric
pressure.
STRUCTURE OF TROPICAL
•
CYCLONE
It is a ring of towering thunderstorm
ma’am where the most severe
weather occurs.
The Eye Wall
• Eye wall is the most dangerous and
destructive part where winds are
strongest and rainfall is heaviest.
STRUCTURE OF TROPICAL
CYCLONE
• Rain bands are the spiraling clouds that surround the
eye.
Rain Bands
There are often secondary cells arranged in bands
around the center. These bands, commonly called rain
bands, spiral into the center of the storm. In some
cases, the rain bands are stationary relative to the
center of the moving storm, and in other cases they
seem to rotate around the center.
IMPACTS OF TROPICAL CYCLONES O
ENVIRONMENT:
• Cause extensive flooding in coastal and inland areas.
• Lead to soil erosion, landslides and destruction of forests.
• Disturb natural habitats and harm wildlife.
IMPACTS OF TROPICAL CYCLONES ON
Human life:
• Disrupt communities by forcing evacuations and causing injuries or
fatalities.
• Pose health risks due to water contamination and lack of sanitation.
• Impact mental health as survivors face trauma and recovery
challenges.
IMPACTS OF TROPICAL CYCLONES ON
Infrastructure:
• Damage or destroy homes, schools, hospitals and other critical
buildings.
• Break down roads and bridges, affecting transportation and access to
emergency services.
• Cause power outages and disrupt water supply and communication
systems.
SUMMARY:
• Tropical cyclones are the intense low-pressure storm systems that bring strong winds
and heavy rain.
• Tropical cyclones consist of three main types: Hurricanes, Typhoons and Cyclones.
• The structure of tropical cyclones include the “Eye, Eye Wall and Rain Bands”.
• Tropical cyclones cause a big impact most especially on environment, human life
and infrastructure.
