LIFTING

Lifting Operations
 Lifts utilizing cranes, hoists, or other
mechanical lifting devices will not commence
unless:
 an assessment of the lift has been completed and
the lift method and equipment has been
determined by a competent person(s)
 operators of powered, lifting devices are trained
and certified for that equipment
 rigging of the load is carried out by a competent
person(s)
Lifting Operations
 lifting devices and equipment has been
certified for use within the last 1 year
 load does not exceed dynamic and/or static
capacities of the lifting equipment
 any safety devices installed on lifting
equipment are operational
 all lifting devices and equipment have been
visually examined before each lift by a
competent person(s)
Responsibilities of Lifting
Crew
 Safety of all personnel
 Use of proper and tested lifting equipmet
 Asses the risks and plan the lifting
operation
 Make sure the work goes as planned
 Stop the work when unsafe
Personnel
 Banksman: There must be a banksman for
each lifting operation. He must be visible,
trained and experienced.
 Crane Operator: Cranes must be operated
only by trained and certified operators.
 Slingers: Slingers must be experienced.
Load
 Lifting crew, especially the crane operator
must know the weight of the load.
Lifting Plan and Risk
Assessment
 Lifting operations must be carried out in
accordance with the relevant procedure.
 Risks must be assessed prior to work.
 The lifting operation must be planned.
Certification and Test
 All lifting operations must be controlled and
certified once a year.
 Lifting equipments must be checked on a 3
monthly basis and color coded if in good
working order.
Safety Devices
 All cranes must have safety devices like load
indicators and limit switches. The alarm must sound
when the load exceeds the capacity of the crane. It is
the operator’s responsibility to stop work upon
hearing the alarm.
 Safety devices must be working during lifting
operations. In case of not working, lifting operation
cannot be performed until safety devices are fixed.
Wind Speed
 Maximum wind speed is 14 m/s. Cranes will not
operate unless:
 Crane is produced to work in high wind condition
 All risks are identified, mitigation measures are
recorded and records are kept in work area
 Site responsible to analyze all the document and sign
 To be able to stop work when the conditions written on
the risk assessment are being pushed
 Light loads are being lifted
 Operation limitations to be recorded in the crane cabin
Lifting Area
 Lifting area must be barriered off to prevent
unauthorized entrance.
 Loads must not pass over other working areas.
If loads have to pass over other working areas,
work must be stopped temporarily and area
must be emptied.
 There must not be any hazards causing trips
and falls on the way of the lifting operation.
Outriggers
 Outriggers must be extended fully and
properly
 All of the outriggers must be extended
 Surface conditions must be taken into account
 Crane must be balanced
Outriggers
 Wider wooden blocks must be put under the
outriggers to reduce the pressure on unit area.
 Leveling: If leveling is not proper, crane can move as
a result of lifting the load.
 Excavations: Outriggers must be placed at least 1.5
times the depth of the excavation from the
excavation.
Outriggers
Hidden voids cause accidents!
Crane toppled over to its side
during lifting
Loose base plate hit the operator
when he jump from the cabin
The operator pass away on arrival
at the hospital
Tag Lines
 Tag lines are used to control the load from a safe
distance.
 Minimum diameter of the tag lines must be 16 mm.
 Tag lines must not be wrapped around hands, arms,
etc.
 Slingers must have their gloves on.
 Before lifting the load, the route of tag lined must be
cleared off to prevent trips and falls.
Inspection Control List
 A competent personnel is in charge of the lifting
operation.
 Banksman can be seen clearly from all locations.
 Crane operator is certified and trained.
 Lifting plan and risk assessment are ready.
 The weight of the load is known by the crane
operator and lifting crew.
 Lifting equipments are inspected and color coded.
Inspection Control List
 Lifting crew is careful about the wind speed.
 Banksman is present and wearing high visibility
clothing.
 Lifting area is barriered off.
 Lifting operation is not causing any risk for other
operations.
 Lifting area is organized well, all tripping and falling
hazards are eliminated.
Inspection Control List
 Safety Devices and Equipment visually
inspected by Competent Person before
completing each lift
 Outriggers are fully extended.
 Outriggers are at the right distance from the
excavations.
 Crane is balanced.
 Tag lines are attached to control the load.
