WHAT IS TRANSPORTATION
• Transportation is basically the movement from one location to
another as it makes its way from the begining of a supply chain to the
customer’s hand.
PURPOSE OF TRANSPORTATION
• PRODUCT MOVEMENT - The primary function of transportation is the
forward and backward movement of the product in the value chain.
• PRODUCT STORAGE - Temporary storage for in- transit goods is
expensive , but in circumstances where the warehouse space is
limited, utilizing the transport vehicle may be a better option.
• CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS - The supply chain involues continuous
and efficient movement of product from Vendor to manufacturer and
to customer - vital aspects are time and service.
• TIMELY MOVEMENT OF SHIPMENT- meeting the customer demand of
delivery.
• MODE SELECTION
• CARRIER RELATIONSHIP -
• BENCHMARKING
• FLEXIBILITY
