What is Verbals?
Verbals are words taken from a
verb. They are only verbs in form but
they act as another part of speech
either as a noun, adjective, or an
adverb.
What is Gerunds?
Gerunds are verb forms ending in –
ing (v + ing) used as nouns. They are
identical to the present participle in
form but differ in function. A gerund
plus a word or words makes gerund
phrases.
Examples of gerunds: speaking
jogging skimming
listening jumping
reading
Gerund phrase: speaking to elders
listening to music
skimming the text
A gerund or gerund phrase
functions as nouns. They can be
used as:
As a subject, subjective
complement, object of the preposition,
direct object or an appositive.
Gerund as a Subject
Example: “Exercising is good for our
health.”
GERUND: Exercising
It is used as a subject. It's
what the sentence is about.
Gerund as a Subjective
Complement
Example: “Lyca's favorite exercise is jogging.
GERUND: Jogging
If a gerund function as a subjective
complement is when it comes after a
linking verb like am, is, are, etc.
In this case, "jogging" comes after the linking
verb "is."
Gerund as an Object of
the Preposition
Example: “Merla keeps herself in good shape
by dancing.”
GERUND: Dancing
Prepositions like by, in, on, at, etc., before the
gerund in a sentence to determine if it is used
as an object of the said preposition.
Gerund as a Direct
Object
Example: “Lester does boxing in the gym
twice a week.”
GERUND: Boxing
Direct object when it receives the action of the
sentence. In this example, the gerund "boxing"
receives the action of the verb "does".
Gerund as an Appositive
Example: “My mother's passion, painting,
makes her happy and fulfilled.”
GERUND: Painting
The appositive typically follows a subject
departed by a comma. In this case,
the gerund “painting" supports the subject
which is “My mother’s passion.”
