Leisure Time - a block of time that is not committed to either
physiologic or social needs.

Benefits of Recreation
Recreation brings a lot of good things to life and is considered as an
important component of a healthy life and to the whole nation not only
individually. Our recreation pursuits reflect the values and character of
the community or the nation as a whole.
• Promotes good health and wellness. Because play involves bodily
movement that ranges from low to high intensity, using play as a
recreational activity help you maintain an active and healthy lifestyle
and diminish chance of developing non-communicable diseases like
diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases. It also helps in
controlling weight, look and feel better, and it develops strong bodies.
• Strengthen family unity. When recreation and leisure time is
shared among family members, chances are the family becomes
closer together, more cohesive and improve their chances of staying
together.
• Reduce stress. Aside from channeling your excess energy,
recreation also offers an avenue to release your repressed
emotions thereby releases psychological tensions and
improve immune system.
• Promote understanding to cultural diversity and
develops community pride. Social interaction through
recreation breaks improves familiarity, anxiety and isolation.
Using Philippine Traditional Sport and Games (PTSG) for
example facilitates understanding of other culture and
heritage. PTSG like Kasipa sa Manguis of the Maranao’s for
example is one way of understanding the beautiful culture of
the Maranao people.
• Promotes economic health. Recreation is a growing
business, at least before the pandemic. With the increase in
affluence among people brought about by technology leading
Classification of Recreational Pursuits
A. Indoor Recreation
-Recreational activities done inside a walled facility with a roof are
considered as indoor recreational activities. In this context, you can
imagine a wealth of activities that can be done. Due to
advancement of technology, people have come up with many ideas
as to what recreational activities that can be enjoyed indoors.
There are activities before which can only be enjoyed outdoors, but
due to engineering breakthroughs, these activities can be enjoyed
indoors.
indoor recreational activities are considered passive activities as it
is limited to activities like board games, card games, painting or
activities that does not require high energy expenditure, but today,
this kind activities includes both active and passive activities.
Classification of Indoor Recreational Pursuits
• Cultural Activities (traditional game and sports activities, musical activities,
art and craft activities, going to museum, and dramatic activities such as
plays, skits, theaters)
• Play and Games Pursuits (sports, card and board games)
• Fitness Pursuits (going to the gym)
All-Time Favorites Indoor Activities
• Cultural Activities: Playing guitar, painting, cross stitching, listening to music,
watching movies, going to museum, surfing the internet/social media, and
some traditional games, malling
• Play and Games: Chess, table tennis, badminton, card games, and playing
video games
• Fitness Pursuits: Exercising in the gym, doing High Intensity Interval Training
at home, aerobic exercises
B. Outdoor Recreational Activities
-activities done and enjoyed outside of the confines of the building
mostly in the natural settings like areas with mountains, lakes,
rivers, scenic views, and rugged terrain are popular with outdoor
enthusiasts. Just like indoor recreation, outdoor recreation offers an
endless option of activities. From walking to the most extreme
adventure activities that a man can imagine.
-provides opportunities for people to be active, relax, develop
friendships, spend time as a family, be challenged and develop new
skills and abilities – both physical and mental. Active outdoor
recreation provides an alternative option for people who seek to
experience the comforts of the wild.
Classification of Outdoor Recreational Pursuits
• Theme Parks. A theme park is a type of amusement park
that bases its structures and attractions around a central
theme, often featuring multiple areas with different themes.
• Forest-Based Adventure Activities. Forest recreation
consists of outdoor activities that are somehow related to our
renewable resources. These activities usually are held in or
around the forest, but are not limited only to this setting.
• Water-Based Adventure Activities. Water-based outdoor
recreation are activities that uses natural bodies of water
such as lakes, beaches, falls, and rivers as a means to enjoy
leisure.
All-Time Favorites Outdoor Activities
• Forest-based Adventure Activities: Mountain Climbing,
camping, hunting, rock climbing, trekking, backpacking,
caving, cycling, hiking.
• Water-based Adventure Activities: Whitewater rafting,
kayaking, swimming, fishing, and boating.
• Theme Parks: exhilarating rides such as zipline, rollercoaster,
drop zone, carting, sky jump, rope course, bump cars, ferries
wheel.
SUMMARY
Recreation is an essential part of human life and finds many different
forms which are shaped naturally by individual interests but also by
the surrounding social construction. Recreational activities can be
done in groups or individually, active or passive, outdoors or indoors,
having a common a goal of improving health and society. A significant
section of recreational activities is known as pastimes which are
activities done to refresh one’s self on a regular basis. Activities such
as cockfighting, cards and board games with a bet for example are
activities that brought pleasure and, in a way, refreshes the person,
however, these activities are not considered as recreational based in
our definition since these are not morally and spiritually acceptable.

will show the importance of recreational activities in our daily
lives. You may use different coloring and art materials for
your output. On the back of the poster, you must put a
simple explanation on your illustration.

• Create a video of yourself doing 2 indoor activities and 2
outdoor activities
• The video should be atleast 2 minutes long
• You may can have your family members or friends to help
with your video, make sure proper safety protocols will be
observed
