Revelations
• Final book of the New Testament
• Written in Koine Greek or Hellenistic Greek (common language spoken and
written in the eastern Mediterranean from the 4th century BC until the mid-6th
century AD: the lingua franca of the Roman Empire even though Latin was the
official language)
• Title derived from the first word of the text “apokalypsis”, meaning “unveiling” or
“revelation”
• Message to seven ancient churches who were facing persecution
• Filled with visions and images that point to Jesus’ return as the ultimate King,
where he will restore his people and usher in the new creation.
• A promise to motivate God's people to remain faithful in the midst of persecution
and hardship.
Revelation 12:1-17
• And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun,
with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve
stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the
agony of giving birth. And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a
great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads
seven diadems. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and
cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who
was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might
devour it. She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the
nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to
his throne
Revelation 17:8-10
• The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to rise from the
bottomless pit and go to destruction. And the dwellers on earth
whose names have not been written in the book of life from the
foundation of the world will marvel to see the beast, because it was
and is not and is to come. This calls for a mind with wisdom: the
seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated;
they are also seven kings, five of whom have fallen, one is, the other
has not yet come, and when he does come he must remain only a
little while.
Revelation 6:8 & 13:1-18
• And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider's name was Death, and Hades
followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with
sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth.
• And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten
diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. And the beast that I
saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's
mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. One
of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and
the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. And they worshiped the
dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast,
saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?” And the beast was
given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to
exercise authority for forty-two months.
Revelation 13:15-18
• And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the
image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would
not worship the image of the beast to be slain. Also it causes all, both
small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked
on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless
he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its
name. This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding
calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his
number is 666.
Revelation 20:1-15
• Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to
the bottomless pit and a great chain. And he seized the dragon, that ancient
serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and
threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not
deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that
he must be released for a little while. Then I saw thrones, and seated on them
were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the
souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the
word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had
not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and
reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to
life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. ...
Revelation 20:13
• And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave
up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of
them, according to what they had done.
