DESIGN OF A

RORO Terminal
Various Types of Sea Vessels
to be Accommodated in the
RORO Terminal
PROBLEM ANALYSES
The problem asks for a “terminal” to
be placed in a very limited lot size. It
is therefore assumed that the
“terminal” is distinct from the wharves
or dry docks and that the latter is
located elsewhere near the site of the
terminal. However, it is still possible
to provide a small wharf for small
vessels used for short-distance
travels.
If vessels dock perpendicularly to the
harbor, the site can accommodate only
two ferries and/or large cargo ships (of
width around 60 meters) at one time. It
can accommodate 10 to 12 smaller
vessels (of width around 10 meters) at
one time.
The problem shows priority to the
development of passenger transport
as well as wheel vehicles. Cargo
vessels may be admitted second in
priority in the subject terminal or by
other ports.
Parking facility is needed more at the
departure side since arriving vehicles
are expected directly to go out of the
terminal
Waiting time vary on different cases
and should be addressed accordingly
in the design.

Follow the movement of vehicles:

•From outside to parking area


•From parking area to boarding
•From outside directly to boarding
•From disembarking to exit
Follow the flow of people on vehicles:

•From parking area going to the building


•From the building going to the parking
area
Follow the flow of cargo and its
handling system:

•From outside going the storage facilities


•From the storage going out
•From the storage to boarding
•From disembarking to the storage
•From disembarking to the exit
Follow the entry of utilities service
systems

(e.g. water supply, electricity, cable, and


telecommunications)
Follow the discharge of waste water

Follow the flow of garbage collection


and disposal

Follow the flow of the differently-abled


persons. Adapt the “Barrier-free
Concept”
Be aware of the presence of the
following and their effect to the design:
•Watch and control tower
•Signal lights
•Bollards
•Piers
•Over-head crane for RO-Los
•Powerhouse
•Water reservoirs
•Garbage house
•Sewage treatment plant and it piping
•Refueling station and its piping
•Storage facilities / Cold storage /
Stockrooms / Warehouses
•Wharf or shipyard for sea vessels
•Motor pool and parking for company
vehicles and motorized loading equipment
(e.g. forklifts and cranes)
Waiting lounge must be of sufficient
size and ventilation so as to
accommodate the enormous amount
of passengers

The ticketing area or counter must be


so located so as to be accessible to
both passengers on foot and
passengers on wheel
Reception and information desk must
be the first thing to be seen upon entry
to the building and the site

Administrative offices can be located


remotely from the people but a satellite
office should be provided where all
possible transactions and paper works
can be done in one sitting
An office or space for the LTO, DENR,
and the DTI representatives is
necessary for the inspection and
validation of car plates and registration,
transport of flora and fauna, and
transport of produce, respectively

Aside from guardhouses, posts or


stations should be positioned on site
for local police units
Fire fighting, rescue, and medical
facilities should, as well be present in
the site

Temporary boarding facilities are


needed for passengers who will need
to wait for a longer time due to
calamities, emergencies, and other
delays
Food service and kitchen facilities
should be of sufficient size and if
possible, decentralized

Private and public toilet facilities


should be strategically posted within
the site and inside the structures

Consider providing amenities like


entertainment, recreation, and
concessionaire
Use the advantage of the beautiful
sunset scene and the seascape to
promote peace and relaxation and
eliminate boredom from the minds of
the passengers

Provide architectural solution and


system for queuing problems
