Fertilization

Introduction
Simply put, the fusion of gametes (Sperm
and Egg) to give rise to a new individual
organism or offspring and initiate its
development
Gametes; a mature haploid male or female
germ cell.
Sperm; are small motile cells. It has a Tail
(Flagella), Mid piece and a Head.
Egg; Large and Non-motile cells.
Matured Sperm Matured Egg
Fertilization begins with the sperm and
ends up with a zygote
This presentation will be focusing on
Events of Fertilization
There are four events or steps of
fertilization;
Sperm Preparation
Sperm-Egg Recognition and Binding
Sperm-Egg fusion
Fusion of sperm and egg pronuclei and
activation of the zygote.

Site of Fertilization is the Fallopian Tube;


pair of tubes along which eggs travel from
the ovaries to the uterus
