Preconception care

What is meant by
preconception care?
• Preconception health care is the medical care a
person receives from their doctor or other health
professionals that focuses to increase the chance
of having a healthy baby.
• Pre-Pregnancy care is the health care a woman gets
before she becomes pregnant.
• Pre-Pregnancy is also called Preconception care
• Prenatal care is the health care a woman gets
during pregnancy
Goal of preconception care
• The goal of preconception care is health education
and promotion, risk assessment, and intervention
before pregnancy to reduce the chances of poor
perinatal outcomes.
What are the 4 goals of
preconception care?

What are the examples of
preconception care?
• Taking Folic Acid
• Screening for STD's
• Managing health problems, such as
• diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease,
obesity, depression, eating disorders, and asthma.
• Avoid from alcohol
• Toxins with potential impact on reproductive health
include lead, arsenic, fluoride, toluene, flame
retardants, plastics, and pesticides.
• Avoid caffeine
• Avoid chocolate.
• Avoid tobacco
• Avoid illicit drugs
• Medicines like Warfarine ( Anticoagulant) should be
avoided as it crosses the placenta.
• Heparin is the better substitute of Warfarine.

should provide you with the recommended dietary
allowance of vitamins and minerals for proper
reproductive functioning.
