Argument vs. Debate
Argument - an oral disagreement; verbal
opposition; contention; altercation
Debate - a formal contest in which the
affirmative and negative sides of a
proposition are advocated by opposing
speakers.
A debate is a form of argument in a
controlled setting where each speaker is
given an allotted amount of time to present
their side.

Topics will be given prior to debate day
Prepare for both affirmative and negative
positions

 Random drawing to establish debate schedule
 Topics to be established prior to day of debate.
 “Pro” and “con” to be established day of debate.
Debate Expectations
 Research Notes are thorough and have many facts to
support the affirmative as well as the negative
 Rebuttal Notes identify key elements of opponents
presentation and work to identify counter points
 Initial Presentation is a prepared speech that hits on
the major facts found in the research notes (and
potentially prepares for upcoming objections)
 Rebuttal and conclusion address objections by
opponent and over come objections using facts and
opinion.
 Respect for others is key in a debate. Interruptions or
insults will have a negative impact upon your grade.
Rubric
Written Portion
This will be an argumentative essay with a
minimum of 500 words.
You will have to choose a side of your debate
(please note that it might not be the same
side as you are arguing for in your debate.
It should include at least six pieces of
evidence.
It is due by the end of the school day on
12/20.
It will be submitted through Canvas.
