WHO WAS HE?
Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh
m a y n o t h a v e b e e n b o r n i n Fr a n c e ,
b u t i t i s i n Fr a n c e t h a t h e h a d h i s
biggest breakthroughs and was
famous for many of his pieces. He
was a post-Impressionist painter
whose work was notable for its
beauty, emotion and color, and
h i g h l y i n fl u e n c e d t h e a r t i n o f t h e
2 0 t h c e n t u r y.
EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
At age 15, van Gogh's family was
s t r u g g l i n g fi n a n c i a l l y , a n d h e w a s
forced to leave school and go to work.
He got a job at his Uncle Cornelis' art
d e a l e r s h i p , a fi r m o f a r t d e a l e r s i n T h e
Hague. By this time, van Gogh was
fl u e n t i n Fr e n c h , G e r m a n a n d E n g l i s h ,
as well as his native Dutch.
In June of 1873, van Gogh was
transferred to the Groupil Gallery in
London. There, he fell in love with
English culture. He visited art galleries
in his spare time, and also became a
f an of t he wr i t ings of C har le s Dic ke ns
and George Eliot.
He also fell in love with his landlady's
d a u g h t e r , E u g e n i e L o y e r. W h e n s h e
rejected his marriage proposal, van
G o g h s u ff e r e d a b r e a k d o w n . H e t h r e w
away all his books except for the Bible,
and devoted his life to God.

become an artist.

I once read a statement that
said the following about Vincent
