Lesson 1

WAYANG KULIT Unit IV


Indonesia is home of a very significant
form of classical theatre, the Wayang
plays. The most famous wayang is
Wayang Kulit.
The Wayang Kulit (wayang- play; kulit-
leather) is a shadow play with two-
dimensional leather puppets. The Wayang
Kulit plays originated from two epic
stories, the Ramayana and the
Mahabharata.
THE PUPPETS

The two-dimensional puppets that are


certainly the highlights during wayang kulit
performance and the Indonesian’s artwork.
THE DALANG

Manipulator-narrator, sits cross-legged at the


back of a screen or cloth. Behind him are the
gamelan musicians who accompany the
performance throughout.
The dalang gives the movement and voice to
the puppets which corresponds to the actors
and also provided signal to the orchestra who
accompanies the play. Without the dalang,
there is no Wayang Kulit performnaces.
THE MUSICIANS

The musicians play a significant role in


the gamelan performance. They
accompany the dalang in delivering the
play. They are seated at the back of the
dalang behind the screen. The dalang
gives signal to the musicians if music is
needed in the scene.
THE LIGHTS

Lights may be in a form of using


traditional open coconut-oil lamp or
electric bulb that serves as the light behind
the white screen to give shadow to the
puppet.
OTHER WAYANG PLAYS

WAYANG WONG OR WAYANG ORANG-


WAYANG WONG OR WAYANG ORANG

The performers act the roles of the


puppets on the stage. It is considered as
one of the major Asian classical dance-
drama forms of theatre.
WAYANG GOLEK

The puppets are shaped like wooden dolls


with round heads and arms. It is an
imitation of human actor who in turn
imitates a puppet. These are dressed in a
traditional costumes. This play is famous
in the area of the Sundanese people.
WAYANG TOPENG

This is different from the other plays


because of its focus in the story which
narrates the activities of noble men who
lived in East Java. This is performed by
men who wear masks which are referred to
as Topeng.
The Balinese Wayang uses puppets like
the one from East and Central Java which
are also leather cutouts. They are different
from the Javanese in terms of choice of
stories and the puppet’s costumes. The
Wayang Wong and Wayang topeng are
very popular in Bali.
