WHAT IS RETREADING TYRES PROCESS ?
• RETREADING A TIRE INVOLVES ADDING A NEW LAYER OF TREAD TO THE WORN
TIRE CASING TO EXTEND ITS LIFESPAN. THE PROCESS USUALLY BEGINS WITH AN
INSPECTION OF THE TIRE CASING TO ENSURE IT IS SUITABLE FOR RETREADING.
RETREADING IS A COST-EFFECTIVE AND SUSTAINABLE WAY TO EXTEND THE LIFE
CYCLE OF A TIRE. IT REDUCES THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF TIRE DISPOSAL
AND HELPS CONSERVE VALUABLE RESOURCES. RETREADED TIRES ARE WIDELY
USED IN COMMERCIAL TRUCKING, AVIATION, AND OTHER INDUSTRIES WHERE
TIRES ARE SUBJECTED TO HEAVY WEAR, AND THEY OFTEN PROVIDE
SUBSTANTIAL COST SAVINGS COMPARED TO PURCHASING NEW TIRES.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF
RETREADING?
• THERE ARE TWO BASIC RETREADING METHODS: COLD AND
HOT.
• THE HOT METHOD INVOLVES APPLICATION OF A BELT OF A RAW
RUBBER ON A SURFACE OF MILLED TYRE, FOLLOWED BY
CREATION OF A TYRE TREAD IN A HOT MOULD AND
PRESERVATION VIA A VULCANIZATION PROCESS.
• THE COLD METHOD INVOLVES BONDING THE PRECURED TREAD
WITH THE CARCASS.

• RETREADING OF DAMAGED TYRE IS DONE BY CONVENTIONAL HOT MATRIX
CURING IN MOST CASES. BUT RECENTLY A NEW TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN
DEVELOPED CALLED "PRECURED TREAD RUBBER RETREADING PROCESS"
WHICH IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS "COLD PROCESS RETREADING". IN THIS
PROCESS, THE PRECURED TREAD RUBBER ALREADY HAS A TREAD PATTERN ON
IT ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR A TREAD MATRIX AT VULCANIZING STAGESTAGE.
• RETREAD TIRES ARE SAFE, LEGAL AND SMART
HERE ARE THE BASIC STEPS INVOLVED IN THE COLD
RETREADING PROCESS:
1.INSPECTION: THE FIRST STEP IN THE
COLD RETREADING PROCESS IS TO
CAREFULLY INSPECT THE WORN TIRE
CASING TO ENSURE THAT IT IS STILL
SUITABLE FOR RETREADING. ANY DAMAGE
OR DEFECTS IN THE CASING, SUCH AS
CUTS, CRACKS, OR BULGES, NEED TO BE
IDENTIFIED AND REPAIRED BEFORE THE
RETREADING PROCESS CAN BEGIN.
2. BUFFING: ONCE THE CASING HAS
BEEN INSPECTED AND PREPARED, THE
NEXT STEP IS TO BUFF THE OLD TREAD
RUBBER FROM THE CASING. THIS
INVOLVES USING SPECIAL BUFFING
MACHINES TO REMOVE THE WORN
TREAD AND PREPARE THE SURFACE OF
THE CASING FOR THE APPLICATION OF
NEW TREAD RUBBER.
3. SKIVING: Skiving is the
process where injuries are
removed from the tyres, using a
number of cutting tools and
grinders
4. Application of new tread rubber:
Once the casing has been prepared,
the new tread rubber is applied
using specialized machinery. The
tread rubber is applied in strips and
then built up to the desired tread
depth and pattern.
5. Curing: After the new tread rubber
has been applied, the tire is placed
in a curing chamber where it is
subjected to heat and pressure. The
combination of heat and pressure
causes the new tread rubber to
vulcanize and bond with the casing,
resulting in a strong and durable
bond.
• 6. FINAL INSPECTION: ONCE
THE TIRE HAS BEEN CURED, IT
UNDERGOES A FINAL INSPECTION
TO ENSURE THAT THE NEW TREAD
RUBBER IS SECURELY BONDED TO
THE CASING AND THAT THE TIRE
MEETS THE NECESSARY QUALITY

hot retreading, making it a more
environmentally friendly option. Cold
retreading also allows for quick
turnaround times, as there is no need to
wait for the tire to cool before it can be
