WHAT IS PLASTIC
֍ Plastic is a material consisting of any of a
wide range of synthetic or semi- synthetic
organics that are malleable.
֍ It can be molded into solid object of diverse
shapes.

֍ Invented in NEW YORK in 1907 by Leo


Baekeland who coined the term ‘PLASTIC’.
USES OF PLASTIC
Plastic is used across almost every
sector, including to produce packaging,
in building and construction, in textiles,
consumer products, transportation,
electrical and electronics and industrial
machinery.
DISADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC
֍ Plastic takes tons of year to decompose.
Some plastics may even take 400 years or
more to completely decompose.
֍ Producing plastic is cheap, however, it is
done using a variety of toxic chemicals
and colours.
֍ This can cause harm to the
environment.
֍ Recycling of plastic produces harmful
gases which cause danger to life of
STATISTICS
●India generates 3.6 lakh million tonnes
plastic waste every year , and only 50% of it,
is recycled.
●Nearly 300 million tonnes of plastic waste are
produced every year around the world.
● Plastic wastage is growing at an annual rate
of 9%.
