Before installing the software
Review the prerequisites
• Review the Planning chapter in the System guide and confirm that
your system meets all the relevant prerequisites.
• Also review the PME 9.0 Install notes, which provide information
regarding installation that is specific to the latest version of the
software.
Name Verification
To make the configuration time faster and more efficient complete a Name Verification worksheet and
document:
• Proposed Power Monitoring Expert server name(s)
• Power Monitoring Expert users, user groups and required access levels
• Device names, addresses and meta data of all power metering and other devices
Confidential Property of Schneider Electric | Page 5
Administrator account
• Log on to your Windows system using the built-in local
Administrator account for installing PME.
• If that is not possible, use an account that is a member of the
Administrators group.
• Permissions for the Administrators group can be restricted by system policies
which might affect the PME installation.
• The built-in Administrator account does not have such limitations.
Starting with Microsoft Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016, the
Administrator account should not be used for software installation.
For these operating systems use an account that is a member of the
Administrators group.

SQL Integrated Authentication
To use SQL Integrated Authentication with a Standalone Architecture
On the application server:
• Add the Windows account for the user who is
installing the software to the local Administrator group.
• Add the Windows account that is used by PME to
access the databases to the local Administrator group.
• Set the 'Logon As A Service' privilege for the database
access account.

Before installing the software
Update the operating system
• Run the Windows Update service to install
the latest security patches and hotfixes from
Microsoft.
Install the .NET Framework
• The .NET Framework 3.5 (or 3.5 SP1) is
required before you can install PME.
• Most of the supported operating systems will
have this framework version installed by
default.
Confidential Property of Schneider Electric | Page 9
Installation process
The installation is a two step process that must be performed in the following order:
1. Installing the SQL Server.
2. Installing the PME software.
Confidential Property of Schneider Electric | Page 10
Installing the SQL Server
There are several options for the installation of the SQL Server.
Choose one of these options and complete the installation of SQL
Server before you can install PME.
Option 1 - Install a new, full SQL Server version. Option 3 is only supported for
Option 2 - Reuse an existing SQL Server version instance. Standalone architectures.
• This can be a full SQL Server version or a SQL Server Express Distributed Database
version. architectures require the full
Option 3 - Use the SQL Server Express version included in PME version of SQL Server.
• The SQL Server Express is installed by the PME installer as part
of the software installation process.
• For detailed instructions on the installation of a new version, or configuring an existing
SQL server, see the PME System Guide.

Microsoft SQL Server
Express vs. Standard / Enterprise
Microsoft SQL Server Express is free and is suitable for most
users (systems with <100 devices).
Some limitations in its capabilities:
• Maximum size of 10 GB per database (.mdf)
• No SQL Server Agent service
• Limited to lesser of 1 socket or 4 cores
• Limited to use a maximum of 1 GB of the total system RAM
• For further information about Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Server, see
msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc645993
SQL Server Memory Usage
• SQL Server will use as much memory (RAM) as possible, and will take it away from software applications and
even the operating system.
• The maximum SQL Server memory usage should be configured to avoid this.
• In addition to setting the maximum memory option, consult with your site administrator to determine whether or
not to enable the Lock pages in memory permission setting in Windows for the SQL service account on all
SQL Server instances.
Standalone Installations Distributed Installations

Supervisor Account
Enter and confirm a password for the supervisor account for the software.
The supervisor account has the highest level of access to the
system.
Use this account to configure the system.
• The strength of the password is evaluated as you type, and the
evaluation is included on the page.
• The password strength evaluation ranges from very weak to very
strong.
• Cybersecurity policies that govern passwords vary from site to site.
• Work with the facility IT System Administrator to ensure that
password management adheres to the site-specific cyber security
policies.

Windows Accounts
PME uses two Windows accounts for its operation, IONMaintenance and IONUser.
• By default, the password for these accounts is
generated automatically by the installer.
• The same password is used for both accounts.
• The IONMaintenance account is used to run
PME database jobs in Windows Task Scheduler.
• The IONUser account is used for subscriptions
created in the Reports application when the
generated report is created using the file share
option.
• Use the default password for the Windows
accounts or change the password.
• You can change the Windows Accounts password at any
time after the installation.

Database Accounts
Select Mixed Mode Authentication or SQL Integrated Authentication
Mixed Mode Authentication
• Use the default password for the database accounts, or change the password.
• PME uses three SQL accounts for its database access, ION, ionedsd and AMUser.
• These accounts are created by the installer. By default, the password for these accounts is generated automatically by the
installer.
• The same password is used for all three accounts.
SQL Integrated Authentication
• PME uses one Windows account for its database access.
• You must choose an existing account, or create a new one with the correct access permissions.
• We recommend you create a new, dedicated Windows account for this.
• The Windows account for SQL Integrated Authentication must be created outside of the PME installer. You cannot create this
account through the installer.

PME Installer system maintenance task
Use the installer for the following maintenance tasks:
Reconfigure - rerun the configuration part of the PME install
process.
Reset Accounts - change the default passwords for the
supervisor account, the Windows accounts, and the database
accounts.
Export System Key – export the system key again in case the
originally exported key has been lost.
Import System Key - import a system key during a side-by-
side upgrade or migration of the PME server.
Uninstall - removes those system files and components that
would prevent a re-installation of the software. Use Uninstall to
