This presentation explores the critical role of electronics, electrical, and mechanical
systems in modern railway operations.

Train to Train
Communications between trains enhance safety by
alerting drivers of potential hazards.
Train to Ground
Real-time information is exchanged between trains and

IOH Department Coach
• A coach is a passenger car present in every
train in which passengers sit and complete
their journey. In case Of Indian Railways,
examples of coaches are S1,S2,A1,etc. Indian
Railway train coaches are two types AC and
Non AC. In Non AC coaches consists of 6
berths in a cabin. A berth is that particular seat
which is allotted to you for your journey like
UB (Upper Berth), LB(Lower Berth) and
MB(Middle Berth), Side Lower Berth and
Side Upper Berth among others.
IOH Breaking System
• In the air brake's simplest form, called
the straight air system, compressed air
pushes on a piston in a cylinder. The
piston is connected through
mechanical linkage to brake shoes
that can rub on the train wheels, using
the resulting friction to slow the train.
Diesel Electrical Locomotive
• The ignition of diesel fuel pushes pistons
connected to an electric generator. The
resulting electricity powers motors connected
to the wheels of the locomotive. A “diesel”
internal combustion engine uses the heat
generated from the compression of air during
the upward cycles of the stroke to ignite the
fuel. A locomotive diesel engine is connected
to an electric generator that is either DC or
AC. The power produced around the 3,200
horsepower. The generator uses this power to
convert it into massive amount of current.
Lube Oil System in Railway Tracks
• Leak-off oil from the adjacent
main bearings lubricates the
crankshaft thrust bearings. Oil
from the main lube oil manifold
enters the gear train at the rear of
the engine, at the idler gear
stubshaft bracket. Oil passages
in the stubshaft bracket distribute
the oil.
Preparation of Locomotive Brakes
• Modern locomotives employ two air
brake systems. The system which
controls the brake pipe is called the
automatic brake and provides service
and emergency braking control for the
entire train. The locomotive(s) at the
head of the train (the "lead consist")
have a secondary system called the
independent brake
Duty of the Drivers in Locomotive
• • Engine drivers are responsible for halting the train at different stations
and reducing the train's speed in the case of route diversion, following
other trains, or avoiding early arrival at the station. They are also
responsible for controlling the acceleration and braking systems of the
train.
• • drive the train between stations or freight depots. speak with control
centre along the route about any issues. follow track signaling, safety and
speed instructions. leave platforms and pull into stations safely
Emergency Braking in Moving Train
• On trains, the expression
emergency brake has several
meanings: The maximum brake
force available to the engine driver
from the conventional braking
system, usually operated by taking
the brake handle to its furthest
position, through a gate
mechanism, or by pushing a
separate plunger in the cab
Cranes In Railways
• A railway crane (North America: railroad crane, crane
car or wrecker; UK: breakdown crane) is a type of
crane used on a railway for one of three primary
purposes: freight handling in goods yards, permanent
way (PW) maintenance, and accident recovery work.
Although the design differs according to the type of
work, the basic configuration is similar in all cases: a
rotating crane body is mounted on a sturdy chassis
fitted with flanged wheels. The body supports the jib
(UK; North America and provides all the lifting and
operating mechanisms; on larger cranes, an operator's
cabin is usually provided. The chassis is fitted with
buffing (UK) and/or coupling gear to allow the crane to
be moved by a locomotive, although many are also
self-propelled to allow limited movement about a work
site
