The operating system (OS) is an essential
program and is a type of system software that
a computer must have. It is stored on the hard
disk and provides the basic operating systems

There are various functions of an operating system:-
• It initializes the computer system.
• It manages all the hardware devices attached to the
CPU.
• It supervises the memory allocation.
• It controls the file handling system.
• It provides a platform to run the other software on
the computer.

WHAT ARE THE TWO TYPES OF
OPERATING SYSTEM?
There are two types of operating systems :-
Proprietary/Licensed OS – Proprietary software/OS refers to the
permission to use a particular software after accepting/signing
legal terms and paying the cost of using it. The software that
comes under this category can only be modified by the
company that owns this software.
Open source OS- Open source refers to a program or software
in which the source code is available to the general public for
use and also for modification from its original design,
absolutely free of charge.
MS WINDOWS
Microsoft created the Windows
operating in the mid-1980s. This is
proprietary/licensed software. Over
the years, there have been many
different version of windows, but the
most recent ones are Windows
11(released in 2021), Windows 10
(released in 2015), Windows 8
(2012), Windows 7 (2009) and
MAC OS X
Windows Vista (2007).
Mac OS is a line of operating systems
created by Apple. This is also
proprietary/licensed software which
comes pre-loaded on all new Macintosh
computers or Mac’s. All of the recent
versions are known as OS X.
LINUX
Linux is a family of the most used
open source operating systems. That
is developed using the open source
model, which means they can be
modified and distributed by anyone
around the world.

UBUNTU
Ubuntu is a Linux based operating system that
can be used on desktops, laptops and servers.
This operating system includes a variety of
applications includes a variety of applications
including word processing, e-mail applications,
