INTRODUCTION
Communication is the life long source for
any organization. Effective communication is
essential to accomplish of managerial
functions. It’s vital for directing and
counselling in the organization .
In the words of Hudson, the means of
conveying information from one person
to another are communication.
DEFINITION
■ Communication is defined as an exchange of
ideas, facts,opinions or emotions between two
or more people. - Newman & Summer
■ Communication is the sum of all the things a
person does when he wants to create
understanding in the mind of another .it
involves a systematic and continuous process
of listening and understanding . –Allen Louise
FEATURES
■ The salient features of communication are as follows –
-Communication involves at least two people who send the
message and one who recieves the message.
- It’s a two way process.
- It’s to create an understanding in the mind of reciever.
- It has various forms like orders,instructions
reports,suggestion,observation and so on.
- Message may convey through words ,spoken or written .
IMPORTANCE
1. Foundation of planning –Nurse manager
communicate with subordinates during formation
of rotation plan.
2. Facillation – It facilitates in achieving team goal.
3. Decision making – by providing right
information at right time.
4. Unity of direction – provides integration in
interdepartmental various activities.
5. Basis of motivation ,cooperation and
improving nurse’s morale.

COMMUNICATION PROCESS
■ Communicationis a dynamic and cyclic process
that involves a series of action and reactions that
takes various steps.
■ It’s a process involving the exchange of
facts ,viewpoints and ideas between staff placed in
different position in the organization to achieve
goal. It has the following elements -
CLASSIFICATION OF CHANNELS
OF COMMUNICATION
■Based on Number of people -
1. Intrapersonal communication – it’s called self
talk ,imagining, thinking silently.
2. Interpersonal communication – communication
between two people.
3. Group communication – Small Group – 20-30 people
Large group – 100 -200 people .
4. Mass communication – Through mass media .e.g -
television , newspaper at distance for large
number of people.

–
1. Verbal communication – The persons talks face to
face .e.g –
Nurse ; ‘ how are you today ?’
Patient ; ‘I am fine ‘.
Types - Written , spoken
2. Non Verbal Communication – message is conveyed
through the vision, reading ,observing , perceiving in
form of gesture , eye contact ,touch.
E.G – Nursing care or communication of unconscious
patient .

■ Based on flow of communication –
1. One way communication – traditional lecture method
belongs to this where listener remain passive no
feedback is taken during lecture.
2. Two way communication – E.x – Any scientific paper
presentation ,the presenter presents the topic then
audience can ask question about the topic this called
cyclic communication .
3. Vertical communication – It follows a line of authority
from higher to downward and lower to upward.
4. Horizontal communication – occures among the all group
members sharing unofficial information .

line of authority . E.g – NS Communicate with her all staff
nurse .

Communication between friend , family etc.

BARRIER OF
COMMUNICATION
The factors which is responsible for affecting the
effective communication are called barriers.
1.Semantic Barriers - aries from linguistic capacity
of the sender and receiver.
2.Psychological Barrires –arising from emotional or
mental status of the sender.
3. Organizational barriers- corporate policies,rules,
inadequate facilities in an organization .
4. Personal Barriers- fear of challenges,lack of
confidence and subjective knowledge ,skill.

5. Environmental Barriers- it mainly ecological
and physical barriers like –high
temperature ,humidity, poor ventilation.
6. Mechanical Barriers – automatic barriers,
smeared ink in printed matter, rolling screen
on TV .
IMPORTANCE OF
COMMUNICATION IN
NURSING MANAGEMENT
Effective communication between nurse and patients has
many benefits .as a health care personnel the
communication skills need to be stealler and top priority.
Some importance are-
■ To be sucessful nurse leader in nursing management.
■ To improve spoken and written skills for nurse leaders.
■ To improve communication skills in hospital management.
■ To improve presentation skills for nurse leaders.
■ To improve listenning skills for patient care.
CONCLUSION
Communication is an essential part of our
normal relationship.with people around us.it
influence our ability and capacity for better
bonding with our patient as well as family and
friend.
In short it’s the first step in building any
bonding and it also stonger the IPR. As a
health care personnel it improves our
therapeutic relationships.

concept analysis.
