Draw the median and transpyloric planes.


1. Draw a line from ASIS to umbilicus
2. Mark the junction of lateral 1/3rd and medial 2/3rd of the line
MURPHY’S POINT

Murphy’s point

• Meeting point of right costal margin and right midclavicular line

Draw the median and transpyloric planes.

1. Put a point on the median plane 2.5 cm above the


transpyloric plane.

2. Mark a point 1.2 cm below and left to the umbilicus

from the median plane.

Join the points 1 and 2 by two parallel lines about 2 cm apart.

Mark a point a little below and medial to the left nipple.
2. Mark the xiphisternal joint.
3. Put a point a little below the right nipple.
4. Put a point 1 cm just below the tip of the right tenth costal cartilage.
5. Mark the tip of the right ninth costal cartilage.

Draw a straight line from point 1 to 3
RIGHT BORDER
Draw a convex line from point 3 and 4
LOWER BORDER
Draw 2 convex lines from 4-5 and 5-1

1. Mark the hilum 5 cm away from the median plane at the
transpyloric plane.
UPPER POLE
2. Mark a point 4 cm from the midline at half way between the
xiphisternum and the transpyloric plane
LOWER POLE
3. Mark a point 8 cm from midline on right side just above the
umbilical plane and left side at subcostal plane
Draw a curved convex line from 1 to 3 and draw a concavoconvex line
from 1-2-3

1. Mark a point 4 cm lateral to T10 spine
LATERAL END
2. Mark a point on the left 11th rib in the mid-axillary line
to indicate the lower pole.
UPPER BORDER
Draw a curved line along the upper border of 9th rib
LOWER BORDER
Draw a curved line along the lower border of 11th rib

CARDIAC END
1. Put a mark 2.5 cm to the left of the median plane on the seventh
costal cartilage.
Draw two short parallel lines 2 cm apart directed downwards and to
the left
PYLORIC END
2. Put a point on the transpyloric plane, 1.2 cm to the right of the
median plane .
Draw two short parallel lines 2 cm apart, directed upwards and to the
right.
STOMACH
LESSER CURVATURE
Join the right margin of cardiac end to the pyloric end with a curved ‘J’
shaped line
FUNDUS
3.Put a point in the left 5th intercostal space just below Nipple
Draw a curve with upward convexity reaching the above point
GREATER CURVATURE
4.Put a point between the tips of ninth and tenth left costal cartilages.
Draw a curved line convex to the left from the fundus to the pylorus
