THE HISTORY OF ROLEX
1905
Hans Wilsdorf
The history of Rolex is inextricably
linked to the visionary of Hans
Wilsdorf , its founder. In 1905, at the
age of 24 , Hans Wilsdorf founded a
company in London specialising in
the distribution of timepieces . He Hans Wilsdorf (1881-1960)
began to dream of a watch worn on
the wrist. Wristwatches were not very
precise at the time, but Hans foresaw
that they could become not only
elegant , but also reliable.
1915
Genius Of Five Letters
Hans Wilsdorf wanted the
brand name to be easily
pronounceable in any
language, and short enough
to fit on the face of a watch.
He also thought that the
name "Rolex" was
onomatopoeic and sounds
great. In November 1915,
the company changed its
name to Rolex Watch Co.
Ltd.
1920
GENEVA
Rolex moved to
Geneva, a city
renowned
internationally for
watchmaking.

1926
THE FIRST WATERPROOF WATCH
In 1926, the creation by
Rolex of the first waterproof
and dustproof wristwatch
marked a major step forward.
Given the name “Oyster”,
this watch featured a
hermetically sealed case
which provided optimal
protection for the movement.
ROLEX OYSTER
HER SWIM MADE
ROLEX FAMOUS
It is one thing to claim a
watch is waterproof. It is
quite another to prove it.
In 1927 a Rolex Oyster
crossed the English
Channel, worn by a
young English swimmer
named Mercedes Gleitze .
The swim lasted over 10
hours and the watch
remained in perfect
working order at the end
of it.
1933
FLYING OVER EVEREST
The first flight over Mount
Everest in 1933 was another –
extreme – test for the Oyster.
The Houston expedition made
history.
The planes flew over the summit
twice. The first trip took place on 3
April 1933 in appalling conditions.
At an altitude of over 9,000 metres
(29,528 feet), the pilots fought to
control the aircraft in the thin air, at
-40° Celsius (-40° Fahrenheit).
CUSTOMER ANALYSIS
The target of Rolex is both men
and women. Rolex makes
watches to suit the taste of both
men and women and are
preferred by both the sexes. The
market segment that the
company has placed its product
in is the luxury market, and the
prices are high as they are
placed in the luxury market.
DISTRIBUTION STRATEGY
Rolex has very limited number of
exclusive stores around the world. It
distributes its watches and
accessories through owned stores,
multi-brand stores and through
e-commerce sites. Approximately
2000 watches are being
manufactured by Rolex every day.
MARKETING STRATEGY OF ROLEX
Rolex since its establishment has created a niche
segment of customers who wear a watch as a
prestige.

than 100 countries around the globe and has very
limited number of company-owned outlets.
