INTRODUCTION
• Computer aided drafting (CAD) is a process of constructing drawing
computer screen with the help of specially developed software.
• Widely used commercial softwares:
1. AutoCAD
2. Pro/Engineer
3. Catia
4. SolidWorks
5. NX Unigraphics
• Autocad is a commercial software application for 2d and 3d computer-aided
design (cad) and drafting – available since 1982 as a desktop application and
since 2010 as a mobile web and cloud-based app marketed as autocad 360.
HISTORY
• AutoCAD was derived from a program begun in 1977 and released in
1979 called Interact CAD, also referred to in early Autodesk documents as
MicroCAD, which was written prior to Autodesk’s (then Marinchip Software
Partners) formation by Autodesk cofounder Mike Riddle.
• The 1st version by the Autodesk Company was demonstrated at the 1982
Comdex and released that of December.
• The 2016 release marked the 30th major release for the AutoCAD for
windows. The 2014 release marked the fourth consecutive year for
AutoCAD for MAC.
BENEFITS OF AUTOCAD
• Quikly create designs

• Long time save

• Reduced Training time/cost

• Improved quality over handrafting

• More Accuracy

• Can be customized to suit the individual needs

• Teaches a marketable skill

AUTOCAD INTERFACE
GIVING COMMANDS
• Command line

• Tool bars

• Drop-downs menus
BASIC COMMANDS
• Units – The units are used to represent the dimensions in AutoCAD
BASIC COMMANDS
• Limits – The limits command in AutoCAD is used to set an invisible
rectangular boundary in the drawing area or viewport.
BASIC COMMANDS
• Erase – To erase object you can enter E in command window or click
the erase too.
• Offset – offset the object in a specified distance in a specified direction
• Trim – You can trim the portion’s you don’t want in the drawing by
using this command.
• Stretch – You can stretch most geometric object. This lets you
lengthen and shorten parts of your model.
• Explode – The explode command disassociates a compound object
into its component parts. You can explode objects such as polylines,
hatches, blocks.
• Copy - Copies objects a specified distance in a specified direction.
BASIC COMMANDS
• Zoom – Increases or decreases the magnification of the view in the
current viewport.
• Fillet – Rounds and fillets the edges of the objects.
• Mtext – Creates a multiple text objects.
• Group – Creates and manages saved sets of objects called groups.
• Dimstyle – Creates and modifies dimension styles.
• Move – Moves objects a specified distance in a specified direction.
• Join – Joins similar objects to form a single, unbroken object.
BASIC COMMANDS
BASIC AUTOCAD TERMINOLOGY
• Absolute Coordinates - A way of inputting points based on AutoCAD's origin
• Backup file - AutoCAD can be set to automatically backup your drawing and
save it. This is a safeguard in case your file gets corrupted. It is saved with
a .BAK extension.
• Grid - This is pattern of dots displayed on the screen to guide you. It can be
toggled on and off by pressing the F7 key.
• Layer - All objects are drawn on a layer. You can group objects (such as
electrical) on a single layer and organize your drawing.
• Linetype - All objects are drawn with a particular linetype. Examples would be
solid, center, dashed, etc.
• Orthomode - This is a drawing mode that allows you to draw only perpendicular
lines. It is toggled on and off by pressing the F8 key
• Zoom - To view either a smaller section of your drawing (zoom in) or a larger
section (zoom out
HOW TO START TO DRAW IN
AUTOCAD
• Units (to mm)
• Page setup (420x297 mm)
• Object snap settings (OSNAP)
• Make nodes visible
• Set text size
• Set dimensioning style
• Set Layer properties
DISADVANTAGES OF AUTOCAD
• Editing and overlapping lines is limited to a few options.

• Limited file format

• Limited Color, Fill and Texture

• Editing the 3D models requires many steps.
