How does the definition
ESSENTIAL
QUESTION pattern help the writer form
concrete concepts?
3
DEFINITION PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT
This pattern aims to do the following:
● Clarify meaning.
● Set the foundation of the argument.
● Give a background for a concept.
4
DEFINITION PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT
Things a writer should keep in mind:
● Choose a seemingly abstract concept.
● Select potential elements of the
definition.
● Create the definition using a text
structure.
5
DEFINITION PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT
● It can be presented in a paragraph or a full
essay.
● The thesis statement should contain the
writer’s own personal definition of the
concept, and that definition should be
aligned with the discussion.
● Succeeding parts of the text should present
and explain the different ways to define the
term.
6
DEFINITION PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT:
Reading comprehension strategies are needed to
EXAMPLE
help students understand a given text. If a student
wants to understand a text, he or she should be
able to choose a strategy to help him or her fully
comprehend the given words or concepts. These
strategies include using prior knowledge, predicting,
identifying the main idea, questioning, retelling, and
summarizing. Each kind of strategy has its own
function, which a student should know in order to
use it effectively.
7
DEFINITION PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT:
Prior knowledgeEXAMPLE
allows students to
understand a text based on the knowledge
they already have, while predicting
requires them to guess what may happen
next in the text. When asked to identify the
main idea, the reader should be able to
deduce what the text is about, while
questioning allows him or her to ask about
the text. 8
DEFINITION PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT:
EXAMPLE
Retelling is a strategy that has students
retell a story or concept in their own words,
and finally, summarizing lets students
summarize the text in their own words.
These strategies are imperative to better
reading comprehension.
9
WHAT ARE OTHER
WAYS
TO DEFINE
CONCEPTS?
10
EXEMPLIFICATION PATTERN OF
DEVELOPMENT
This pattern aims to do the following:
● Clarify a point.
● Give a picture or specific instance.
● Concretize an abstract idea.
● Illustrate examples in great detail.
● Discuss the 5 W and 1 H questions.
11
EXEMPLIFICATION PATTERN OF
DEVELOPMENT
● The thesis statement should still contain
the concept being discussed and the
specific ways that it will be exemplified
in the written output.
● Each body paragraph should contain a
different example in order to illustrate
the main idea.
12
EXEMPLIFICATION PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT:
EXAMPLE
Reading strategies are usually prompted by
teachers by asking questions or showing
visual cues related to the text. For
example, when a teacher asks students to
reflect on the question “What do you
already know about the topic?” that is an
example of unlocking prior knowledge.
13
EXEMPLIFICATION PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT:
EXAMPLE
If a teacher would like students to
summarize the text, he or she would ask
them, “Give the important details of the
story.” These strategies can also be done
by oneself. A reader who is reading silently
may write questions in the margins or in
the notebook about the text, which could
eventually be answered once finished.
14
EXEMPLIFICATION PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT:
EXAMPLE
Classmates could have a contest of who
does the best retelling, and the judge could
be the teacher. Having readers make
predictions could be another contest;
whoever guesses the closest to the ending
or result would be the winner. These
examples of using strategies could help the
reader understand a complex text.
15
WHY ARE EXAMPLES NECESSARY
TO COMPLEMENT THE DEFINITIONS
OF CONCEPTS?
16
EXPANDING IDEAS FOR THE CONCEPT
PAPER
● Concepts serve as the backbone of the
paper.
● Expanding ideas gives readers more
opportunities to understand the ideas being
discussed.
● It creates a contextual situation for readers
who may be interested in the potential
project.
17
EXPANDING IDEAS FOR THE CONCEPT PAPER:
EXAMPLE
It is imperative for SHS students to use reading
strategies to understand content-based texts in
major subjects. Previous research states that many
readers, both foreign and local, are not aware of
these critical thinking strategies for reading. This
study will be helpful for teachers who teach reading,
especially at the senior high school level. This will
determine if there are critical readers in the SHS.
18
WHY SHOULD A WRITER
CONTEXTUALIZE THE CONCEPT
FOR THE SPECIFIC RESEARCH
TOPIC?
19
LOCATE THE Cite how the writer used the
DEFINITION
PATTERN IN definition pattern to discuss
A RESEARCH the concepts in the study.
20
What concept is being discussed in the
paper?
Which type of definition did the writer use
to present the concepts?
21
Create an extended definition
EXTENDED
DEFINITIONS of at least two concepts from
your own research topic.
22
How did you create your extended
definitions for the chosen concepts?
23
QUESTION
How is definition different from
exemplification?
24
QUESTION
What is one strategy for using
exemplification in writing a concept paper?
25
QUESTION
How can “coworking spaces” be defined for
an introduction in a concept paper?
26
Writers can use the definition
and exemplification pattern
of development for a concept
paper.
The definition pattern of
development allows writers
to clarify the concept into
something that is concrete. 27
The exemplification pattern
of development allows
writers to illustrate their
points about a topic.
The two patterns can be used
together in an introduction
paragraph of a concept paper. 28
