Nannette Marrero Berríos outlines her teaching philosophy which is guided by theories of pragmatism, humanism, and behaviorism. She believes that students must be actively involved in their learning experiences and that teachers should promote critical thinking skills. Her philosophy also emphasizes meeting students' needs and reinforcing positive behavior. She views teaching as a profession that requires constant self-evaluation to best support student learning and development.
2. What is Teaching?
• The activities of educating, instructing or
teaching
• Activities that impart knowledge or skill
• The act or business of instructing
• The profession of a teacher
3. What is Philosophy?
•A particular philosophical system or theory; the
hypothesis by which particular phenomena are
explained.
• Any personal belief about how to live or how to
deal with a situation.
• The rational investigation of questions about
existence and knowledge and ethics.
4. What is Theory?
• An exposition of the general or abstract
principles of any science.
• A tentative theory about the natural world; a
concept that is not yet verified but that if true
would explain certain facts or phenomena.
• A belief that can guide behavior.
5. Philosophies and theories that guide me
• Pragmatism
• Students need to be part of their learning experiences.
• The teacher has to be the agent that provides the
opportunities for those experiences to occur.
• The teacher has to promote critical thinking skills among
the students.
• Democratic education
• Constructivism
6. Philosophies and theories that guide me
• Humanism
• Human beings need to satisfy their needs in order to
achieve self-actualization
• Human welfare
7. Philosophies and theories that guide me
• Behaviorism
• Operant Conditioning
• Positive reinforcement – students have to be praised or
rewarded when they act as desired.
• Negative punishment - students have to be aware that if
they act in an undesired way it is going to have
consequences.
8. My Teaching Philosophy
• I have always believed that all human beings are capable of
learning at some degree. In order for learning to occur some
needs have to be already satisfied and there has to be previous
knowledge (schemata). This is where pragmatism meets
humanism.
• As a teacher and as Second Language Learner I should go back
and analyze how did I learn in order to be able to help my
students. It is easier to learn when concepts can be associated
and when some sort of academic development has been
achieved.
9. My Teaching Philosophy
• A teacher has to work according to the students’ needs. I know
that there is a curriculum that should be followed but,
sometimes the necessities that our students have make it
difficult to comply with the requirements and I believe that
when a curriculum is designed it has to fit the reality and needs
of the Puerto Rican children.
• Every child has the potential of learning a Second Language, the
key is the approach that it is going to be used and of course the
reinforcement given at home.
10. My Teaching Philosophy
• In addition, as a teacher I have to let the students know that
every act has a consequence and through operant conditioning
that can be done. Perhaps at the beginning the students will be
skeptical or won’t take it seriously, but if the routine continues
they will follow and understand it.
11. My Teaching Philosophy
• I work for the students. I have to be in constant analysis of my
work to evaluate myself and take immediate action if the
strategies used aren’t working.
• I am a role model, counselor, mediator, guide, psycologist. In
reality a teacher is a profession with many unrecognized sub-
specialties.
• This is a profession of love. If you don’t feel like becoming none
of the above sub-specialties, then you should reconsider your
profession.
