To celebrate the India’s 72nd Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the flag from the ramparts at the gate, as was done in the past. Many high-ranking leaders, such as President of Congress Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, attended the celebration at the Red Fort. In his speech on Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the Indian military forces and wished them good luck in the future. He also said that the girls are proud of India. August 15, 1947 India achieved independence from British rule.

It was the same day that the Indian Independence Act of 1947 was passed by the British Parliament, transferring the legislative sovereignty of the Constituent Assembly of India. To celebrate India’s first Independence Day, India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the Indian national flag over the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. Since then, the flag has been raised by the incumbent PM who then addresses the nation.
