An airplane or aeroplane (informally plane) is an airplane with a fixed wing that moves forward from the thrust of a jet engine, propeller or rocket engine. Airplanes come in various wing sizes, shapes and configurations. A wide range of aircraft use includes recreation, transportation of goods and people, military and scientific research. Worldwide, commercial aviation carries more than four billion passengers annually by the airline and carries more than 200 billion tons of cargo per year, which is less than 1% of global freight traffic. Most planes fly aboard by a pilot on board, but some are designed for remote or computer control, for example, computer-controlled such as drones.

The Wright brothers invented and flew the first plane in 1903, which was recognized as “the first serviced and controlled flight heavier than air.” They are based on the work of George Cayley since 1799, when he outlined the concept of a modern airplane (and later built flying models and successful gliders for transporting passengers). Between 1867 and 1896, the German pioneer of human aviation, Otto Lilienthal, also learned to fly heavier than air. After limited use in World War I, aircraft technology continues to evolve. Aircraft were present in all the great battles of World War II. The first jet aircraft was the German Heinkel He 178 in 1939. The first jet aircraft, de Havilland Comet, was introduced in 1952. The Boeing 707, the first widely successful commercial jet, was in commercial use for more than 50 years from 1958 to at least 2013.

In the United States and Canada, the term “airplane” is used for fixed-wing aircraft. In the United Kingdom and most of the Commonwealth, the term “aeroplane” is usually applied to these aircraft.

The wings of a fixed-wing aircraft are static planes extending on both sides of the aircraft. When the plane moves forward, air passes through the wings, which are shaped to create lift. This form is called the aerodynamic profile and has the shape of a bird’s wing.
