Carabiners can be used for a variety of applications, but one of the most common is climbing. There are many different types of carabiners, but they can all be divided into two distinct categories: lockable and non-lockable. In addition, there are also different forms of carabiners for various applications.
Not Lockable
A non-locking carabiner has a pivoting spring gate which closes under spring pressure. There are three main types of gates: the right gate, the curved gate and the screen gate.
Straight gates are the most used and the strongest of the three. Due to their durability and low price, straight gates are an excellent choice for many climbing applications.
The bent gate are curved to facilitate clipping. Not only do bent gates clip more easily, they also unclip easily, making them a great choice for quickdraws.
Finally, the metal grid is the last of the three. Wire gates, as the name suggests, are made of wire which makes it the lightest type of carabiner. Due to their light weight, wire racks are less prone to gate knocking and are a good choice for minimizing weight.
Locking
Similar to non-locking carabiners, locking carabiners have many different types: self-locking, screw, and triple-locking gates. The operation of a locking carabiner is via a sleeve which slides over the gate opening. The sleeve then prevents the gate from accidentally opening.
A self-locking carabiner, as you might expect, automatically locks the gate and is suitable for quick applications. The screw locking and triple locking carabiners are locked via a sleeve which is screwed up and down to lock the gate.
Shape
In addition to the type of gate, the carabiners also come in different forms which are used for different applications.
The most basic form is the oval which also distributes the load. Unfortunately, an equal load distribution can be a disadvantage for the carabiners because the side of the gate is weakest.
The next type is the D-shaped carabiner. Unlike oval carabiners, D-shaped carabiners reposition the load on the most solid spine. As a result, D-shaped carabiners generally have a higher load capacity than their oval counterparts.
In addition to the straight D carabiners, there are also modified D carabiners. The modified D’s are formed so that the opening side of the gate is larger than the hinge side. This allows the gate to open further and facilitates clipping. Modified D’s are also the most commonly used carabiners.
