Guilty Crown is a 2011 Japanese anime television series directed by Production I.G. that premiered on Fuji T.V.’s noitamina block on October 13, 2011. The plot focuses around Shu Ouma, a high school student who gains the “Power of the King,” which allows him to pull forth things known as “Voids” from other people.

He is subsequently thrust into a struggle between the GHQ, a quasi-governmental group, and Funeral Parlor, a rebel movement that seeks to reclaim Japan’s independence from the GHQ. Shu must deal with the load his talent places on his shoulders as well as the horrible mystery of his history during this process.

ASCII Media Works and Square Enix produced two manga adaptations, one each. In April 2012, Nitroplus released Guilty Crown: Princess of Deadpool, a light novel. Nitroplus also created a spin-off visual novel for Windows called Guilty Crown: Lost Christmas, which comes with a 15-minute original video animation (OVA) titled Guilty Crown: Lost Christmas.

On December 24, 2029, before the events of the main plot, a biological hazard known as the Apocalypse Virus, caused by an impact event, throws Japan into turmoil. The occurrence became known as the “Lost Christmas” incident. Japan, unable to manage the danger, sought international assistance, and the United Nations dispatched the GHQ to assist them. At the cost of Japan’s freedom, the GHQ effectively controls the epidemic and restores normalcy. Ten years later, the Funeral Parlor, a resistance group, launches a new battle against the GHQ to reclaim Japan.

Shu Ouma, a high school student in Tokyo’s Roppongi neighborhood, meets Inori Yuzuriha, the vocalist of the popular online band Egoist, who is seeking sanctuary at his film club’s studio. The Anti Bodies of GHQ attack the workshop and arrest her for her association with the Funeral Parlor. Shu follows Inori’s robot’s coordinates to a drop zone, where he meets Gai Tsutsugami, the chief of the Funeral Parlor, who wants him to protect a vial.

Shu rushes to rescue Inori as she is attacked by GHQ Endlave mechs while the Anti-Bodies attack the Roppongi region in search of the vial, which shatters. The Void Genome, a formidable genetic weapon produced from the Apocalypse Virus, provides Shu the “Power of the King,” allowing him to extract Voids, psyche-based weaponry given physical shape, using his right hand. Shu then extracts Inori’s Void and destroys the Endlaves that are attacking him.

After opting to join Funeral Parlor, Shu falls in love with Inori, who has a remarkable resemblance to his late sister, Mana. However, after killing a classmate’s younger brother on one of his missions, he flees the gang. Funeral Parlor tries to take the meteorite that sparked the Apocalypse Virus outbreak from GHQ while Shu is away. Gai and his soldiers are caught in the crossfire as the Anti-Bodies destroy their numbers with a “genetic resonance” broadcast that spreads the Virus throughout Tokyo. In the midst of the pandemonium, Shichir Keido, the Anti-Bodies’ commander, seizes control of the GHQ and sets his sights on eradicating the remains of Funeral Parlor.
