An ox, also known as a bullock in Australia and India, is cattle or bovine trained as a draft or riding animal. Oxen are often castrated by an adult male cattle; castration makes animals more obedient. Cows (adult women) or bulls (intact males) can also be used in some areas.

Oxen are used for plowing, transportation (pulling carts, hauling wagons and riding), grain mowers and powering machines that grind grain or deliver irrigation, among other things. Oxen can also be used to skid logs in forests, especially with low impact and select-cut logging.

Draft oxen are usually yoked in pairs. Light work, such as carting household items on good roads, may require only one pair, but for more difficult work, if necessary, add other pairs. The team used for heavy loads on a complex basis can exceed nine or ten pairs.
