PlayStation 5 (officially abbreviated PS5) is the upcoming home gaming console developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Announced as the successor to the PlayStation 4 in 2019, its launch is scheduled for late 2020.

In a Wired article published in April 2019, Sony’s lead architect, Mark Cerny, revealed information about the then-unknown PlayStation 4 successor. This new console will include a dedicated solid-state drive, ray-tracing graphics processor, backward compatibility with PlayStation 4 and support for PlayStation VR, as well as support for digital and disc-based titles.

The first news about the PlayStation 5 (PS5) came from lead architect Mark Cerny in an interview with Wired in April 2019. Sony plans that the PlayStation 5 will become the next generation console and will be available by the end of 2020. At the beginning of 2019, Sony’s financial report for the quarter ending March 31, 2019, confirmed that new next-generation equipment is under development, but will not be released until April 2020. Current specifications were released in October 2019. Full specifications were given in Cerny’s online presentation and published by Digital Foundry and Sony on March 18, 2020.

The PlayStation 5 uses AMD Zen 2 with eight cores running at a variable frequency limited to 3.5 GHz. The graphics processor is a specialized on-chip (SOC) system based on AMD RDNA 2, which has 36 computing units operating at a variable frequency, with a frequency of 2.23 GHz and a capacity of 10.28 TFLOPS. Both the CPU and GPU are controlled by a special boost system, including AMD SmartShift technology, which adjusts the frequency of these systems based on the current activity of both chips to achieve ideal constant power consumption and SOC model performance.

For example, if a processor is running at a lower activity, a power-up system can reduce its frequency and increase the frequency of the GPU to allow that GPU to run at higher performance without otherwise affecting power consumption or cooling. Because of this, Cerny said that direct comparisons based on computational units or FLOPS with other hardware systems might be inaccurate. The GPU includes support for hardware-accelerated ray tracing rendering, providing real-time ray tracing graphics.

The hardware includes a new audio technology called Tempest Engine, based on AMD GPU technology, which allows you to consider not only hundreds of sound sources in the game when playing sound compared to 50 for PlayStation 4, but also how this sound is presented based on end-user device and preferences. The device will include 16 GB SDRAM GDDR6 with a throughput of 448 GB/s.
