A road is a roadway, thoroughfare, route or road to the ground between two places that have been paved or otherwise improved to allow travel or some kind of conveyance, including a car, cart, bicycle or horse.

The roads consist of one or two roads, each of which has one or more canvases and all connected sidewalks and road verges. Often there is a bicycle path. Other road names include car parks, avenues, motorways, buses, highways, or primary, secondary and tertiary local roads. Historically, many roads have been simply recognizable routes without official construction or maintenance.

In the United States, laws distinguish between public roads open to the public and private roads that are under private control.

Road design is part of the highway. Structural road design is the design of a road to the environment in order to prolong its duration and reduce maintenance. The floor design method Shell is used in many countries to develop new asphalt paving.

Road construction requires the creation of a continuous limited right-of-way or roadbed, overcoming geographical obstacles and low enough classes to travel by vehicle or foot travel and may be required to comply with standards established by law or official guidance. The process often begins with the removal of soil and stones by digging or exploding, building embankments, bridges and tunnels and removing vegetation (this can include deforestation), followed by a pavement. In road construction, various road construction equipment is used.
