For those who have watched Breaking Bad, the name “Saul Goodman” might ring a bell. He is the witty, cunning, and street-smart lawyer who helps Walter White, the show’s protagonist, launder and distribute millions of dollars earned from producing and selling high-quality methamphetamine.

But who is Saul Goodman behind the flashy suits, cheesy commercials, and clever puns? Let’s delve deeper into the character and his backstory.

The Birth of Saul Goodman

Saul Goodman was born Jimmy McGill, a struggling attorney who operates from his dingy office in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jimmy, like many small-time lawyers, has trouble attracting clients and paying his bills.

However, Jimmy is also a gifted con artist, a skill he learned from his older brother Chuck McGill, a successful lawyer and partner at a prestigious firm, Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill.

Chuck, who is also Jimmy’s biggest rival and critic, suffers from electromagnetic hypersensitivity, a rare condition that makes him unable to tolerate any electrical fields, including cellphones, television, and computers. But it’s not just Chuck’s condition that creates conflict between the two brothers; Chuck also doesn’t think highly of Jimmy’s legal abilities and constantly undermines his efforts to succeed.

Despite Chuck’s discouragement, Jimmy persists and eventually lands a client that sets him on a path to becoming Saul Goodman. The client, Emilio Koyama, is a former partner of Walter White’s in the drug trade. Emilio is facing drug charges, and Jimmy, seeing an opportunity to make some quick cash, suggests that Walt plead guilty to the charge of possession of product and take the rap for Emilio’s manufacturing operation, allowing him to plead to a lesser sentence.

Walt is initially hesitant, but when the DEA captures Emilio, he decides to take Jimmy’s offer. After the successful negotiation, Jimmy rebrands himself as Saul Goodman and takes on more clients in the underworld of the Albuquerque drug trade.

The Legal Services of Saul Goodman

Saul Goodman’s services seem to cater only to people of questionable morality. He makes no secret of his willingness to bend the law to get his clients what they want. He is a fast-talking, flashy, and confident attorney who can get anything done for the right price.

He operates out of a neon-lit strip mall with a sign that reads “Better Call Saul” and spends thousands of dollars on cheesy commercials in the hopes of attracting more business from the criminal underworld.

Aside from his legal skills, Saul Goodman is also a master of manipulation, able to get even the most hardened criminals to trust him and do his bidding. He has a knack for finding loopholes in the law, cutting deals with judges and district attorneys, and even bribing witnesses to give false testimony in court. He is, in many ways, the perfect criminal lawyer.

The Tragic End of Saul Goodman

In the final season of Breaking Bad, things start to unravel for Saul Goodman and his clients. When Walter White’s criminal empire collapses, Saul tries to flee town with the help of his fixer, Mike Ehrmantraut. However, they are caught by the DEA, and Saul is forced to cooperate with the feds in exchange for a new identity and a fresh start in life.

Saul reappears in the spin-off series, Better Call Saul. The series follows Saul’s life before he became Walter White’s lawyer, chronicling his struggles to make a name for himself in the new persona he created and his relationship with his brother, Chuck.

Over the course of the series, we see a different side of Saul Goodman. He is more vulnerable, more human, and less sure of himself. We also learn about his tragic past, including his failed marriage and the death of his law partner, which have left him jaded and cynical about the law.

The Legacy of Saul Goodman

Saul Goodman is undeniably a fascinating and complex character. He embodies the dark side of the legal system and the moral ambiguity of criminal defense. He is also a survivor, making the best of his situation and always finding a way to come out on top.

His legacy will live on through the increased popularity of his catchphrase, “Better Call Saul,” as well as through the spin-off series named after him. He is a testament to the power of storytelling to create captivating characters and worlds.

Whether you love him or hate him, you can’t deny that Saul Goodman is one of the most memorable characters in modern television history.
