Lammas

Bella Dionne • July 24, 2017

Lammas, also called Lughnasadh, honors the god Lugh. Stemming from the Anglo-Saxon word, half-mass or Loaf Mass, Lammas marks the time where we, as Wiccans and Pagans, celebrate our first of the harvests, and give thanks for our other harvests to come.. This time of year is crucially important, as it sets the stage for how we will survive the upcoming winter. It is traditional that we feast with loaves of bread from the harvest of our grains. With corn husk dolls, grapes and grain, fresh picked vegetables, apples and other fruit, we express our gratitude.

At Wiccan Seminary, this celebration is no different than at your local covens. Here, on our online campus, we invoke deity. Invocation is what the Aquarian Tabernacle and Wiccan Seminary is known, and quite famous for. We channel the energy of the gods, such as John Barleycorn, Lugh, Ishtar, Aphrodite, Zeus, Persephone, Diana, and many others. We do this every year, and it is known by the name The Lammas Monologues. It is a very special connection where we, the student body, take into ourselves the very energy and life-force of deity.

In a recent interview, Kara, the Dean of Education, was quoted as saying, “In Wicca, invocation is one of the primary ways that we interact with deity. We invoke so that we as clergy can commune with a deity in a very personal way and so that our community can interact with deity in a more direct way. “

When asked how this translates to an Internet environment, unlike a more traditional coven or church, Kara stated, “The SecondLife program follows many of the same invocation-heavy ritual style that the mother church does. While we don't do Spring Mysteries in SecondLife, we do have several rituals that require multiple invocations throughout the year.”

At Wiccan Seminary, one can expect multiple opportunities to practice invocation of deity. It is one of the truly special connections WSTS gives its students and faculty that you may not find in many other schools. The Sabbat rituals throughout the year are always well attended. They are very well received by even the most senior of students, practitioners, faculty and even alumni.

Please find the time for the Gods, come to the campus on Second Life and be enlightened by the deities and the story of our history. Honor deity in a truly special connection, have fun and share bread with us. By invocations and honoring deity, deity and source honor us. It is within this special bond where Wiccans find our place in the Universe.

We look forward to sharing bread, and maybe some mead with you. Blessed Be.
