Julia Hetzel on Instagram: "I would say three things about my painting style:
✨ I like to paint loose
✨ I love natural colors (blues, greens, soft pinks, neutrals)
✨ I love texture.

I strongly believe that “painting loose” stems from my background growing up painting with my grandmother. I started off structured, but as I gained more confidence as an artist I loosened up and allowed myself to just “feel” the painting.

My draw towards using texture and natural colors comes from being an interior designer. While designing homes, I saw the impact of “bringing the outside in” and the depth that texture brings to a space. So now my paintings incorporate both!

In this painting tutorial I show you how to paint a landscape as featured in the image above. This painting is inspired by a rural area in southern New Zealand. This painting features a rural landscape at the end of summer where the fields and hills are dry, the grass is yellow and the trees are casting shadows in the soft evening light. All good ingredients for a landscape painting.

Isn’t always fascinating to see what is behind the top layer of a painting? Every time I look at an artist’s artwork I wonder what was the first mark on the surface? How many passes were made? Did the artist already have something in mind? Was it completely spontaneous and intuitive and built directly in the moment? Did the artist do preparatory sketches?
