Jamie Walton | Nettles & Petals on Instagram: "Creating NO-DIG Growing beds 🌱

I’m in the process of converting an old unkept allotment into an organic no-dig vegetable garden and it’s finally time to create the main growing beds! And of course they are all going to be created utilising the ‘no-dig’ or ‘minimal disturbance’ methodology.

This old allotment space had been dug over year after year and the soil has sunk and degraded overtime. But by mulching instead of digging or tilling, we can mimic natural processes and start to rebuild that soil structure and allow the myriad of life within to thrive whilst creating a symbiotic relationship with the plants we then grow, increasing yields and boosting biodiversity. There’s also far less weeds and effort once they are made! 😊🙌🏻

A no-till garden is a method of gardening that does away with the traditional use of tilling to prepare the soil. In no-till gardens, the soil is not dug up and turned to prepare for planting. Instead, organic components like compost and animal fertilizers are layered over the soil to create a rich, nutrient-heavy base in which to plant seeds and starters.

Above is the picture of the original garden spot that I have been gardening nonstop since 1997. That's 15 years and a very large amount of food that has been produced on this small vegetable plot. I have to say this garden has never let me down though. Occasionally I will have a crop failure due to human error or weather conditions but this garden has endured and is a workhorse. Over the years the surrounding trees have increased in size and last year we decided to make this garden smaller…
