Josh | Dog Training & Behaviourist on Instagram: "How to teach your dog to settle ⤵️ 🐕 Place a Mat onto the floor 🐕 Lure your dog over to the mat and place into a down 🐕 Shower the mat with treats (to build positive associations and to build duration) 🐕 Slow your rate of reinforcement. Give a treat every 5 seconds, 10 and so on. This is to build duration and keep them staying for longer Lastly, proof their settle. This means taking them to different places and building up an amazing settle. ✅️ Take your time ✅️ Use the same mat when out and about ✅️ Practice this inside and out. It can be used with visitors, outside settles and various other situations Follow for more tips ✨️ #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #dogs"

64K views · 1.7K reactions | How are YOU reacting to your dog's behavior? As humans, we tend to focus on our dogs' behavior but often forget to pay attention to our own behavior and reactions. Creating a fixed space for your dog to relax and practice impulse control is essential to creating a balanced dog. The goal is to create a calm, neutral state of mind where our dog doesn't feel the need to react to everything happening around them. An example is the story I posted the other day where I had all my dogs on place while the plumbers were working in the kitchen and the landscapers were mowing the lawn. Instead of allowing them to be all over the plumbers or bark at the landscapers outside, instead I directed my dogs to stay on their beds, their "place," while all that activity was going on. When teaching this in the beginning, most dogs do not have impulse control or do not understand the concept of staying on a specific place for a period of time. What I see quite often is when the dog makes a mistake to get off the place, the human jumps up and runs over to try and keep the dog there. That fast/aroused reaction will cause a dog to learn that just moving or attempting to leave will cause you to frantically move, something a leader would never do. Instead, if your dog is moving on their place, let them. The moment they step off, immediately say "no" in a CALM but firm tone and guide them back. Do NOT rush. It's actually beneficial for them to make mistakes and receive calm, confident guidance from you. This way, they learn from mistakes and get to experience you as a calm, confident leader, which will build your relationship and help you achieve a happy, well-behaved dog! Camryn | Dog Trainer | K9 Summit Training on Instagram: "So often, when we get home to let our dogs out, they are super over-excited. This can lead to jumping, running through thresholds, or even knocking objects over. Instead of letting your pup out immediately, wait until they have a calm mindset to let them out of the kennel. This might take some patience, but it will be well worth it to have a good mannered dog when you get home. Happy training 🐾 #dogtraining #chattanooga #crate #cratetraining #balancedtraining #overexcitement"
Monty on Instagram: "Apparently teenagers are harder than puppies 😭 Monty used to walk so nicely on a leash as a puppy, and then suddenly this happened, so we’re trying various methods to help relearn this skill . ✨We still walk with treats or during mealtime ✨We try to walk when it’s quiet outside ✨We are still building a history of high reinforcement rate just for sticking close to us . Check out @monty.mung for a part 2 of this training! What we do if our dog just doesn’t come back 🤷🏻‍♀️ . #dogsofinstagram #puppiesofinstagram #goldenretriever #teenagedog #goldenpuppy #puppytraining #dogtraining #adolescentdog #firsttimepawrents #firstdog"
