Romans vs. Dacians, c. 101-106 AD.
Dacian shields and weapons from the base of Trajan's Column in Rome
The brutal hook shaped two handed blades encountered by the Romans during the Dacian wars (an area corresponding to the Balkans and parts of Poland, Ukraine) could smash through the scuta and take off a legionaires arm. In response, the Romans adopted a plate armor that extended down the length of the arm. After a series of brutal wars, the Romans were eventually able to conquer the gold rich parts of Dacia - which they mined to depletion. -DK
Dacian reenactors, both wielding a falx, a long, sickle-shaped weapon dreaded by Roman legionaries.
