June 8, 1869: Ives McGaffey patents a "sweeping machine." This vacuum cleaner is from 1926-1929. It was the first of its kind to feature an aluminum body, an on/off switch (oooh!), and the agitator brushroll—an innovation that used metal beater strips to vibrate pieces of dirt from carpets.
January 1, 1934 — January 1, 1937 The Kirby Model 1C The dirt box (Sani Em-tor), lip height control (Toe Touch Control) and a belt driven brush roll are introduced in 1934 with the Model C. In 1935 the unit becomes the first to bear the "Kirby" name and in 1936 the model 1C is introduced featuring a rounded light hood.
