This is a very fine shield of the Luo tribe, Kenya (bordering on(to) Tanzania). Composed of two different colored hides that are handstitched and wrapped around a bent wood 'frame' the shield has brilliant, almost human form, design. Ca. 20th Cent. 34"

Dance Shield Tutsi, Rwanda Wood, pigment Early to mid 20th Century 12 in/30 cm $2500 The Tutsi excelled in their craft artistry, be it basketry or decorated wooden shields of this type that were used in traditional dances. Undecorated rattan shields were used during battle but these painted pieces had major ritual significance and each pattern appears to be unique.
